Into their 20th year of their career, they've just released a new album of good old fashioned rock 'n roll.
They were formed in 1989 as a grunge/garage band in Brisbane, and once they released their first EP (which was self funded) in 1993, they replaced Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box at no.1 on the Australian Alternative chart.
Although their first two albums recieved limited success, they were still chosen to play in festival all around the country throughout the mid 90's. Their third album (Internationalist) however rocketed them to success, and won multiple ARIA awards.
The new millenium marked a revolution and a hiatus for Powderfinger, with the release of four blockbuster albums despite breaking up from 2005 - 2007. 2000's Odyssey No.5 and 2003's Vulture Street won them a barrowful of awards, and a whole new catalogue of hit songs.
After the hiatus in 2005, the band members spent more time with their families and Bernard Fanning released his debut solo album which gained him even more success.
2007 saw the return of the band with a brand new album, Dream Days At The Hotel Existence. It debuted at no.1 and broke the record for online sales. (which has since been broken again by Lady Gaga >.>) They did extensive touring with fellow Australians Silverchair, and even played at the 2007 AFL grand final.
And finally, one month ago they released their 7th Studio album, Golden Rule. After debuting at no.1 again, they because only the second band to have 5 no.1 albums, the first was Silverchair (who I'll write a thread about next) They are currently touring, and have announced their retirement for early next year.
