Nick Drake (Official Thread)

One of my current fascinations is Nick Drake. His voice is extremely hypnotic and very soothing. His music doesn't sound dated at all. Very simple, very organic.

It's an experience listening to his songs because it's hard to separate the emotions you sense in his voice and the one's you pick up by his lyrics. There's this underlying layer of contemplative melancholy in his voice that is hard to keep at bay.

I guess you can say that I 'feel' his music on a personal level quite easily. What do you think about Nick Drake?

My parents had three Nick Drake vinyl albums kicking around for years so I grew up listening to him.

I now have cd's of those albums:

Five Leaves Left
Bryter Layter
Pink Moon

My favourite tracks are, Northern Sky, Road & Pink Moon but I love all his songs.

he battled with depression throughout his life. became so poor he had to live with his parents. constantly had nervous breakdowns. barely had any friends in his final years of life and killed himself from an overdose because he gave up on life.

It's been argued that the mixture of medications he was taking may have caused accidental death though he was certainly a very fragile character who found it hard to cope with life.

There's a great BBC documentary on Nick Drake. If you can get a copy, it's something to see.

An excellent book about Nick is "The Biography - Nick Drake" by Patrick Humphries published by Bloomsbury in 1997. Well worth trying to get hold of a copy and I would recommend it highly.
