Some good follow ups in here...and a little controversy.

First I don't think there is anything to get upset about on either party, EF can say he thinks it is irrelevant from his point of view, he did not intend anything personal towards you Joe, just thought the poll itself was questionable.(I have deleted some of my less than fabulous threads over the years myself.;))

I was a little confused at first what Joe was driving at when I read the OP yesterday morning, but I was still asleep at that point, I should have waited till the coffee kicked in before posting my comment.

I am hoping both of you, Joe and EF, just relax, you are both intelligent guys and valuable members here and life is too short to get hung up on small things, at least it is for me.

Back to Joe's original question,,,if you had posted Iron Maiden then I might have gotten it right off, but I have never really considered Metallic a progressive kind of band so that kind of threw me off.

For pure progressive rock influences, I still would have picked IQ, Marillion, and PT as the definitive bands leading the neo-prog movement. But I will acknowledge that Maiden does possess some prog qualities as well.

I am awake right now so that makes it easy to sort this one out.:D

Neo gets my vote they influenced the bands I listen to in the new prog era. I don't see the metallics relation at all. Iron maiden yes you see it in the metal prog but o don't listen to it.

Sorry Joe your insults regarding Neo bands make no sense to me iq, pt and marillion are all extremely talented and very creative.

I don't see Joe's honest opinion on "neo-prog" as insulting. I truly see nothing progressive about "neo-prog" just as LG etc see nothing progressive about Metallica AJFA is by far more progressive then any neo release I have every heard.

But seriously that is not the question anyway. Who is more influential on the whole.
Still say Iron Maiden and Metallica because to me Neo isn't anything but un-progressive (lack of complexity, lack of timing changes to speak of..etc) pop rock. Any influence it has had on the scene has just moved those bands away from the progressive rock mode and not down a different prog tree path, IMO.

My intention was not to insult these bands but to voice my opinion. Obviously you see it differently. Would you be insulted if I stated I didn't like fried liver and onions and you loved it? Or if it was vice versa, I wouldn't take it as an insult. I would respect that you have a different taste than me.

No, I'm not a fan of Marillion, however I am fan of IQ having The Wake, Subterranea, Dark Matter, and Frequency which IMO are very good albums. I didn't state that I disliked these bands.

Porcupine Tree is one the best prog artists from the last 20 years IMO. I am a huge fan of the band and have most thier discopraphy and even voted In Absentia as the best album from the last 20 years recently in thread that was posted here at CRF. I don't consider PT to be under the neo-prog label. With that being said, for me the band is very hard to place under one genre as thier sound, musical structure and style has changed quite dramatically over thier 20 years of existence. Again, my opinion.

I hear Metallica as being progressive and having a influence on certain sub genres of progressive rock. You don't, and I respect your opinion and I don't see your opinion as an insult to me.

Some might see this as an irrelevant question and poll. That's fine. However if one states this, I do find it insolent, maybe officiousness would be a better word. Really, what can I do about it?

Here's a poll I conducted on another site some time ago. Though not exactly the same question, it is very similar.

how is this not trashing I genre, I stay out of the metal threads and area for the exact same reason. I wouldn't go into a thread to trash a band let alone a whole f* genre. I may vote for one band over another but thats it. If you would like my opinion on Metal prog and Iron Maiden I'll gladly give you my feelings but here I would be jumped on by half your board. I'll decline and stick to the I don't understand what you are talking about. Neo-Prog has a bunch of very talented musicians and interesting ideas.

I didn't have a problem with the poll just your comments which now make less sense since you state you like IQ, one of the leaders in the Neo-Prog movement.
Some other Neo bands I like
    Kenso, Magenta, Arena, Pendragon

    I stated most, not all.

You see it as "trashing". I see it as stating my opinions and observations on bands and/or a certain sub genre. It isn't a personal attack on you and your musical tastes what so ever.

That's your prerogative and your personal choice not to go into a thread and "trash" a band, let alone a whole f* genre. Your defination of trash isn't mine. I equate it to my personal opinion and observations on a band or a genre. I direct these comments in reference to a band, genre, musical style, etc. not to another member(s) of CRF. If a person does take it personal, first of all that's not my intention at all. Secondly, I have no control on that person's feelings, thoughts and response. I do somewhat understand people's negative reactions as they are very passionate about the music they listen to. Again, let me reiterate it's not my intention to get other people upset.

For me, I try and make a conscious effort to be respectful and sensitive in my opinions of other members dislikes/likes in thier taste of music. I have made this mistake in the past and have learned from that, however I don't see that in this case. Again, my comments are directed at the music.

It wouldn't bother me in the least if you made a comment, opinion, or observation in regards to a certain band, music, genre, etc., that I have an appreciation for that you don't. I would respect your opinion. Truth be told, I have admiration for people who speak thier opinions that are in a completely different view from mine in the context of being respectful, polite, and sensitive on a personal level. I would be upset if that person stated and directed thier comment at me personally: for example; "joe, you have bad taste in music"," you don't know what you're talking about", I don't think this is a good poll", etc.

How does it make less sense that I like the band IQ? As I stated earlier, most, not all bands of neo-prog appeal to me. From what I understand from your statement is that you are confused that how can I like IQ if I don't like most of the bands from this genre(?). Maybe I should put it in this context and let me ask you so I can understand your comment: Are you saying that I can't have an appreciation for a certain band(s) because I don't have a "liking" for most of the artists from a particular sub-genre? I'm confused, I think. That's like me saying to you, "how do you like a particular band if you don't like most of the other artists from a certain genre."

No bad feelings on my part what so ever. I do these polls because I have fun doing them and interested in other members observations and hope that they like to participate in them as well. :)

^^^No bad feelings what so ever. I appreciate your humilty. I've been guilty also of reading posts and missing certain words that are relevant in others responses as well. I think we agree that we disagree on some certain aspects of both our comments on the poll question. Thanx for your thoughts and input on my poll.:grinthumb

I don't really like ANY of it myself. Does that some how make my opinion invalid or insulting ?

The poll is a question to which I gave an honest answer. I have no plans to enter any or all of the neo-prog band threads I see here at the forum and tell everyone how boring and non-progressive I feel these pop bands are as that WOULD be abrasive and confrontational .

However under the context of this poll which asks for an opinion I feel it is not only an acceptable practice to state my opinion on the matter but also feel that it would be boring and a bit tyrannical to only allow responses that are "positive".

I not only don't care if others don't like bands I'm into also am very glad everyone DOESN'T like everything that I do.
