Acid Rock is a subgenre of Psychedelic Rock that emerged in the mid-1960s, heavily influenced by the use of hallucinogenic drugs like LSD (commonly known as 'Acid'). It pioneered a heavier, louder, and more improvisational sound that directly bridged the gap between 1960s garage rock and the birth of Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock in the 1970s.

I'll start things off by naming one of my favourite Acid Rock bands, and you do the rest . . .

Jefferson Airplane

I'll be seeing Vanilla Fudge next month with three original members.

In general, I think the phrase is a HUGE umbrella that includes many bands with nothing in common.

I tend to agree with you, but I copied what Google AI had to say about the genre and pasted it. Then again, 'Heavy Metal' bands like Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden all have little in common, and they have even less in common with the Scorpions who some consider a heavy metal band. Furthermore, the R&R Hall Of Shame must consider (to name a few) Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, and Marvin Gaye to be Rock & Roll artists.

Sure, all musical genres have outliers or exceptions to the rule. I think the more knowledgeable a person is then the easier it is to get tripped up or over scrutinize the broad brush approach. It's safe to say everybody at a site like this has been guilty of that!

I'll start by saying that I'm not an expert on 'acid rock' or 'psychedelic rock'. I will also say that some of the contributors to Wikipedia and bloggers who think they are historical gate keepers compound the confusion. I hate revisionist type history.

Check out this list of acid rockers at wiki. I don't think it's a great list but I would like to hear what you think.
I only hope that anybody researching the subject checks several sources or just uses their own judgement.

My initial statement was that many 'acid rockers' have nothing in common. That was based on one thought going through my head (I'm simple like that!). Many bands in that category are what I would call 'single bands' while others were the beginning of AOR. That was the foundation of my comment.

Furthermore, the R&R Hall Of Shame must consider (to name a few) Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, and Marvin Gaye to be Rock & Roll artists.

I will say that the name would be more accurate if it was 'Music HOF'. However...I've been there several times and it's always a fun day seeing the travelling displays along side the permanent displays. They've got some cool shit in there.

I've heard good debates about the early influences of RnR being included or the later styles inspired by RnR being included. It's a good discussion for another day.

I actually looked at the Wikipedia list prior to making my post. There were 13 bands I'd never heard of--the others a mix that either fit my idea of the genre or did not fit. I would never have included Cream, Santana, Deep Purple, The Amboy Dukes, or Alice Cooper, regardless ow how much LSD the band members took. Essentially, the idea of this post was because no one else here had done it, and I think that it's a relative subject with regards to the history of R&R music. I haven't been a member here long enough to make critiques, but I didn't see a whole lot of in depth discussions going on about the the history of R&R when I first arrived, which is what I expected when I joined.
As for the origins of R&R, that would be a far more serious discussion that even I would prefer to avoid.

Cheers!

The Wiki list has several bands on it that I don't consider 'acid rock' like Sabbath and Deep Purple for instance but most of the others fit the category ....or at least some of their lps do.

Many consider this the single most famous acid rock song.....please argue with the critics and fans...I'm just the messenger. ;)

In A Gadda Da Vida

Like Diz above my favorite band of that era is Jefferson Airplane especially Crown of Creation and Volunteers but all their early lps are great imho.
A favorite track
Eskimo Blue Day

I won't debate either of your posts. And I definitely agree with Jefferson Airplane. Still, I can honestly say that I'm one of the few people I know my age who never bought an Iron Butterfly album.

Here's a perfect example of why you can't believe everything AI tells you. First it states that Acid Rock bands were known mostly for their LONG, Improvised Jams. Then it includes this band (The Chocolate Watchband), and, so far, I haven't been able to find a song of theirs that makes it to 4 Minutes in length. Oh well! Contradictions exist in all chaotic systems. Either way, here's a cut for all those curious, including me:
