Been a bit quiet here of late as many of the tracks played are covered in here, though I've got some new ones from last weeks and today:

Distant Clouds - David G. Bonacho

Navigator (Pt. 1) - Jose Padilla

Quantum Consciousness, Pt. 1 - David G. Bonacho

Eleven - Pillowdiver

From what I was reading Brian Eno's Music For Films is his 1st entry into Ambient music coming out in 1978. I didn't know about Steve Roach Structures from Silence, though I see it was made in 1984. The station I listen to haven't explored these earlier Ambient Tunes.

Getting back to John Carpenters music, I like his music a lot, though I'm unsure if it's Ambient, perhaps more Electronic Symphonic though does that make that Ambient? Ambient is electronic, I think from what I was reading about it having less Structure. John Carpenter tends to use his music while telling a story through his films (well in the couple that I have seen with the Escape films and Big Trouble...).

Wikipedia has information regarding Ambient Music (which Brian Eno coined).

Lot of these artists crossover into various sounds and are often called either 'electronic' or 'ambient' at times.
I'm a fan of Eno of course but also like Tangerine Dream defined as 'progressive electronic' and Dead Can Dance defined as 'prog folk' by some places and 'dark wave/world ambient' in others.
Carpenters Lost Themes series get tagged as 'electronic' but to me they are more than just that.
Often is difficult to say since many of these styles blend and merge together at times.
Case in point......WIKI has an ambient artist list and includes ...Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Mike Oldfield, PInk Floyd....and many others who clearly have ambient elements in their music but are not ambient artists imho.

I can agree there's artists which have Ambient Elements to them, though it doesn't necessary make them Ambient, it would be like calling out The Doors as an Lounge band since Morrison was a fan of Sinatra and there's some songs which suggest that, though it doesn't make The Doors a Lounge band.
There's modern examples such as Jens Buchert which do Ambient though seem to have other non-Ambient tracks and likewise with All India Radio, Steve Roach appears to be an influence, though All India Radio also cover Pink Floyd songs as well.

I accidentally 'discovered' William Basinski not long ago.....had never heard of him before.

Only him?

Many people would have him foremost on their mind in terms of Ambient Music (since he coined the term), so it makes sense to have him as the best, that's not to say he is though or well everyone can choose what they prefer, which is why radio stations love doing countdowns of the most popular songs. The station I listen to SBS Chill do one Jan 1st every year, though Ambient is only one part of a series of Genres covered, from what I could recall from this years one, not many Ambient tracks were covered in the Top 100 either with bands like Massive Attack getting a few tracks in there.

I'll check it out eventually, thanks.
