Released a couple of years after the successful Countdown to Extinction it seemed Megadeth wanted to continue the focus on rhythm, groove and not so fast paced as the likes of Rust in Peace.
The first 3 tracks are fairly slowish to medium paced in groove and pretty thrashy in the actual guitar work. I love the riffs particularly of Reckoning Day. Train of Consequences and Addicted to Chaos have featured on many live sets and are solid tracks as well.
A Tout Le Monde sets for the intro a nice quiet atmosphere before it kicks in. Was a controversial song in the sense that MTV had banned it misinterpreting it to be about suicide. I love this song, nice melody to it. Megadeth have under rated ballads.
Elysian Fields, The Killing Roads and Blood of Heroes are three solid and enjoyable songs to listen to. As stated this is an album not of the Rust in Peace speed and intensity but for me these songs are under rated. Very nice groovy yet retaining a thrash metal formula in the mix.
Family Tree another controversial song that talks about incest rape. I enjoy the song though and I found it took real balls for Mustaine to actually put this song on the album. Another under rated song.
The rest from Youthanasia down to Victory are also very solid tunes, the only one I would say I wasn't big on is Black Curtains.
Overall I think this album deserves around an 7-8 out of 10. Very solid album.
My favourite songs on this album.
