Just a simple and plain no. They had different styles in their music. Like jazz, avant garde and such.

Really joe??? I thought we'd connect here. I love King Crimson but..wow...prog leaders and a huge inspiration to many artists of the genre.

21st Century Schizoid Man is about as metal as anything metal since...so I need to tip the hat to that tune.

The epic quality in general I can see as well. Maybe I should have voted on the fence. :heheh:

No, while plenty of Metal bands are inspired by 70's prog bands that doesn't make them proto, IMO. I mean Maiden is basically super fast, heavy prog rock w/ teeth but King Crimson lack real heaviness so again, no for me .

Not really since real heavy metal was already out when Crimson was making it's first albums. However, there are a few Crimson songs that you would think influenced just about everything that came after them. And they (like the Beatles, Zeppelin, Van Der Graff Generator, etc etc) had several songs I would easily define as heavy metal.

Proto metal I would say are things like some of Tull's first album, songs like Tommorow Never Knows, Helter Skelter, Voodoo Chile, Manic Depression, Eight Miles High, I can See for Miles, Tales of Brave Ulysess, etc. Blue Cheer, etc.

Well, I think you get the point. Things that preceeded Black Sabbath and other bands that could loosely be considered heavy metal.
