Your cool Uncle
It's with profound sadness I have to report that Kate McGarrigle died Monday after a 4-year bout with cancer. She was 63 years old and died at her home in Montreal.
Kate was from a musical family and was known initially as half of "Kate & Anna McGarrigle," a critically acclaimed folk/pop duo that put out many albums from the 1970s on. Their music was a mix of pop, folk and other traditional French-Canadian music. They first came to public acclaim after Linda Ronstadt and others began recording their material. Perhaps their best known song was Ronstadt's cover of Anna's song "Heart Like a Wheel." By turns humorous, romantic, and dark, their music covered a wide range of subjects and styles (Ronstadt's version of HLAW omitted one of the original verses that spoke about death).
Kate was also known as the ex-wife of Loudon Wainwright III, and the mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
Very, very sad.
