I love J6k3gsE2rfleVTdMziANQgMiPZclc4TgYJEhJ4-VekRL6A57EQ.jpg! I could approach this band in a number of ways!

"The Band Most Unrepresented by their Breakthrough Hit Single":

"The Middle"
is not even close to their best song!

"Kings of the Closing Song":

These guys no how to use a pop rock epic to end a great album!

"Goodbye Sky Harbor"
(You'll either hate this song simply for length or sink into the beautiful harmony!)

"Dizzy"-Closer off of the last c.d. 'Chase This Light"! So addictive and one of the best epic breakup songs ever!

"23"-Gush, gush, gush! These guys are just amazing lyrically and musically at capturing feelings in a way that's poignant and not cheesy!

"The Band that represents a genre (Emo) that transcends it"
:

Jimmy Eat World is considered to be the Godfathers of Emo! Nothing against the genre as tons of music I like comes from it but there is NO WAY that they are under the limitations of that label! Here are a variety of their other great songs:

"Bleed American", "The Sweetness", "Big Casino" (great rock singles)

"Hear You Me", "Cautioners", "My Sundown" (trio of gaspingly chilling beautiful harmonious songs off their breakthrough album "Jimmy Eat World" aka "Bleed American)

"Disintegration" (epic song with a feel like soul music IMO, forgive the cheesy fan vid, bleh!)

Ironically, only one song I listed is off their best c.d.! If you guys want to check out the best introductory c.d. start with "Clarity":

Clarity.jpg

It is their most solid album track for track and where they really got their groove as a band in my opinion!

That is all and I really believe that even with all the tracks I've listed I only cracked the surface of this great band! If you are a fan feel free to post more stuff about them and if you are new to them or only know "The Middle" then maybe you will get a clearer perspective of them now!

Re: "The Official Jimmy Eat World Thread"

:) Big (& great) review, as always Bry.

I'm not a fan, sorry... I don't want to insult anyone, but they sound a bit young to me.

I respect your opinion as always OB but I definitely think the only song that sounds juvenile is the middle. In a genre that they are the named the Godfathers of (Emo) they seem to be one of the only ones who bring any maturity to it. They are also more pop rock to me but in the best sense. I think they are pop in the oldest sense where they have some of the best harmonies in modern music. Very few of their songs have that tired old fast strumming guitar that most pop rock songs lazily depend on. So much more goes into it. Anyways, I guess I'm biased but in the most enthusiastic way possible about this band! :grinthumb

:) it's just his voice... it lacks something I can't describe.. :) 5 years of heavy smoking would help...

Re: "The Official Jimmy Eat World Thread"

Thought this thread should be added to and what a great addition I found! One of my favorite songs off of Clarity was Goodbye Sky Harbor (located in the OP) which clocks in at 16:10 minutes with a very subtle building of layers to make a long but enchanting melody. This live version is a five minute version which replaces the length with a hard rocking guitar and only gives a sample of the building melody. I love the original but I thought the live version kicked ass and was a good way of making the song more suitable for the live audience.

GoodBye Sky Harbor

I agree with this post, Obviously all the young semi-emo teens get on the bandwagon from 'The Middle' and that's usually enough to put me off a band. But after buying and listening to Bleed American, I've discovered how great they really are.

I think we all need a look at some of their demos before jumping on the potential, almost, pre emo thing here:heheh:

and possibly my favorite
Better Than Oh

I can't remember the song that was on the radio tons in like 2002/2003ish, I loved it.. I can't remember which it was though... the DJ would always play Stacy's Mom, then this Jimmy Eat World song....

I'm guilty of only knowing The Middle, and I like it, it definitely appeals to my pop sensibilities. Have to check out the clips.

Re: "The Official Jimmy Eat World Thread"

I've heard OF this band before, and although I'm sure I've heard their music on the radio before, I'd be hard pressed to name one of their songs.

Off to a good start so far with "23". Kinda has that Dishwalla sound.

And "Bleed" reminds me of Bush. :D
