They were the first band I was obsessed with, starting in about 4th grade, when I started watching the TV show. (This was around 1986.) I had every album on tape, including some bizarre compilations.

Nowadays, I still like them but classify them as a guilty pleasure. Every year or so, I get a hankering to listen to them again and fill out my CD collection a little more.

Mike was always my favorite Monkee, and I also think he was the most talented. Micky was a great singer, though.

One of my favorite Monkees albums is the much maligned "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees," believe it or not. Most of Davy's stuff grates, but Micky and Mike's stuff is top notch.

Another really great one is the "Head" soundtrack. Even if you haven't seen the film, it works well on its own as a sort of bizarre, surrealistic album. The interspersed dialogue bits from the movie give it a hypnotic, "Revolution 9" sort of feel. There are less actual songs on here than other albums, but all of them are great.

Next time, I'll discuss the virtues of "Instant Replay."
