Melodic being the keyword...
I've been looking forever. But everyone I ask seem to point me in the direction of some post-rock band. I mean, it's good and all, but I want something a little different.

I'm looking for good instrumental rock music, kind of like Joe Satriani and some of Dream Theater's stuff I guess.
I also listen to a japanese band called MintJam. They have a lot of great instrumentals. Here's one by their guitarist:

YouTube - ‪Melodic Instrumental Rock / Metal Arrangements #29 (Ballad)‬‏

I'll post a few more examples here as to what style of music I want.

YouTube - ‪MintJam - Incommunicable Message‬‏ - MintJam
YouTube - ‪Melodic Instrumental Rock / Metal Arrangements #11 (Ballad)‬‏ - I also like ballads like this one.
YouTube - ‪Joe Satriani - Always with me, always with you‬‏ - Joe Satriani
YouTube - ‪Dream Theater - Wither (Instrumental)‬‏ - Dream Theater

I also love faster stuff like Satriani's "Extremist" and MintJam's "Z".

I hope you kinda got a picture of what sorta music I want.
I'm very thankful for suggestions!
I really want some new music to listen to, haha.
Thanks!

I like Dixie Dregs, they are all instrumental, not sure if they qualify as melodic though Dude...:hm:

Jean Luc Pony has done some interesting instrumentals over the years, but he's a violin player.:D

I really like Santana. There is a compilation album "The Best Instrumentals" which is just awesome!

Samba Pa Ti

Flor d'Luna

Another goodie is Jeff Beck. My favorite is his "There and Back" album.

The Pump

Star Cycle

Edit: CRF has an entire thread dedicated to instrumental rock that you may wish to check out CLICK HERE

Check out Ozric Tentacles. They've been around since the mid 80's. Kinda psychedelic jam band stuff, but they rock out hard, too

Vanden Plas are like DT, but not as good in my opinion. Shadow Gallery are a bit like DT and are very good. I am not sure who is like Joe Satriani, except shredders like Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and John Norum.

Camel are a predominantly instrumental band. They are very melodic. The same could be said of Refugee (really Patrick Moraz with The Nice).

Mike Oldfield, until the late seventies, was mainly instrumental and melodic.

Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Dave Greenslade, Tomita and Roger Powell are instrumental as long as you don't mind synthesizers.

Isotope and Mahavishnu Orchestra are instrumental, but jazz-rock. It is an understatement to call Gary Boyle and John McLaughlin very fast guitarists.

nice list so far!

Brand X, Pierre Moerlen's Gong and Shakti (John McLaughlin's band)

A bunch of Japanese bands are instrumental
Kenso (although not sure how melodic they are)
