This is a symptom of the "cloud" revolution that's taking place right in front of us.

I noticed the brick & mortar shops are all down on inventory, whether music or videos.

Wal-Mart's shelves don't stock nearly as many DVD's as they used to...reason Netflix and other streaming companies.

CD's, same story i-tunes drives the market so the CD will be extinct soon. Maybe Classical and Jazz labels will still offer them but mainstream rock/pop etc. are going to digital downloads.

I am going to stop collecting soon anyway, there aren't many albums I want to pick up so the CD not being made anymore won't affect me too much.

DVD's are another story, I have a few digital copies on my laptop, but they are not the same quality as a proper Blu Ray disc. Sigh when will the young generation driving the market realize it's not just about portability and flexibility it's about quality too.:nw:

The cloud is the worst thing to ever happen in the new technological world we live in, I understand the marketing genius behind it, but if consumers think it has anything to do with quality or satisfying their needs think again, it's all about control and profit.

It sickens me to watch kids line up outside a store to buy anything new and improved with a bloody apple stamped on it every few months like a bunch of trained robots with no minds of their own, pitiful.:mad
Holy crap I say these kinds of things everyday.

My kids are catching on and buying cd's but its going to be too late for them. they are seeing the apple bull crap for what it is. it all about controling every last drop of the dribble.

the problem is the 20 somethings, the buld of them are mindless. I streamed video 1 time and the quality is horrible. yet all folks talk about is how great and easy it is. gimme a break how easy do you need something. lazy sods.

^^It can get tedious at times though Sox from what I've seen. If you are used to doing a lot of work in a day time would drag on interminably in a shop. They live for 2 peak periods every year from what Simon told me and in the summer they give everyone as much time off as they want.

I wouldn't have minded trying it for a couple months when I was younger, but most likely I would've gotten bored and moved on to something else.

I would struggle standing around kicking pebbles all day LG, I like to be getting on with things. I guess if it was my own record shop I'd be content listening to music, but that doesn't pay the bills. :uh:

I will just travel to Nottingham or Sheffield to do the deals, I fear there will be more HMV shops closing before this saga comes to a stop:(

Some even camp outside the store overnight - saw two young men being interviewed last year who'd been there for two nights (awaiting i-Pad 4 if I remember right), so they could be front of the queue - absolutely beggars belief!

Sox and I had a stroll into town on Saturday, and popped in HMV, it was packed solid with people trying to pick up bargains. Thing is even with 25% off their normal price you can still pick the same things up cheaper online.

Nothing on earth would get me queuing up overnight to be one of the first to own a "new and improved" device...:nw:

HMV here is quite reasonable for prices. I looked at the new Helloween album online and asked the clerk in HMV what their price is and after shipping etc. it worked out to about the same as Amazon. For DVD's I've been stocking up, $5 a pop and Blu Rays $10 for old ones, new releases are still $20 which is normal.

I guess since the ownership change here they dropped their prices significantly and the selection is far and away the best for retail shops in this area.

I would like to see the prices drop in HMV over here, I am still stocking up on BLU-RAY, DVD and CD whilst I can. All the great stock from Chesterfield HMV has been shipped out so there is not much left, just the rubbish. I wish someone would open up their own shop in Chesterfield or on the outskirts. They could specialise in certain areas, I know it's a pipe dream but I am allowed.

I dont buy the internet is cheaper thing anymore. Here in the states they are reporting or collecting sales tax accross state lines. so if you add everything up tax+shipp+product its not cheaper anymore in everycase.

signs are there that look like the internet model is just a business model that didn't add up to anything more or less than brick and mortor. you still need a distribution network to hold product or pay for one yourself. marketing costs and you have staff costs and technology overhead which costs bundles.

but thats just my opinion.

^^I agree with you Mr.Jim. The biggest fault I find with brick and mortar shops was the Time it took them to figure out how to compete with Amazon and other giants. It's not always about price either, taking care of a customer means they'll be back and it's a lot easier to get satisfaction at a real store like Sears than online distributors. In all the years I shopped at Sears I've never had one problem taking something back that didn't live up to expectations.

I agree LG, they have not figured it out yet. I remember working for Our Price and when I relocated to Bristol I was getting annoyed with the management as they were lazy and I had run my own shop and was getting itchy feet as there were no more shops available for me to manage so I looked at the HMV store round the corner.

At the interview I was asked loads of questions about injecting stock into the store from late 60's early 70's and Fleetwood Mac amongst others. I baffled them with band names and I didn't get the job. Turns out they were just spying on Our Price, wondered why they asked me so many questions about staff in my branch. :bonk:

If they bothered to find out what people want as a whole they would do well but they don't and sell rubbish to the masses. If there was a good store near here I would be in all the time and would spend a fortune. I am running out of options here, just ordered more from Amazon and finding a distinct lack of online stores nevermind high street stores.

Someone needs to get their heads screwed on and open up a decent store with decent stock and soon.:mad

Been into HMV in Birmingham and purchased a couple of bits, they still have no online site to buy from and they are not very forthcoming when asked when the website will be up, I think they are still struggling, great prices on some stuff and again some really expensive stuff.
