You are transferring 40 year old cassettes recorded from FM radio to digital mp3 files?
I was you once. The sometimes strange archival process.
A decade or so ago, I had a 15 year old cassette copy of a bootleg Pink Floyd album that I recorded to digital disc, imported it to iTunes so I could listen to it on my iPod or car anytime.
Yes!
They may be old recordings but good music doesn't age and I still enjoy listening to them.
I want to digitise them before my cassette deck gives up the ghost.
I use Audacity to record each cassette side to a single wav format file.
I normalise the recording to correct any stereo imbalance, remove any DC offset and adjust the level.
The recording is then split into tracks, each of which is saved to a separate file.
I tidy up the start and end of each track, adding fade-in & fade-out where necessary to remove unwanted DJ interruptions at the start and end.
Finally I burn to a CD, adding meta data such as the name of the track, band, date etc.
It is a time consuming process but I am retired so I have the spare time.
I have replaced some tracks with downloaded mp3 or CDs. However, quite a few are hard to identify and locate.
Sometimes you can use the lyrics to find the name of the song and band. If it's an instrumental track then it's a lot more difficult.
I have tried several websites that allow you to upload a file containing a snippet of music but the ones I have tried only succeed with popular music and well known bands.
Does anyone have suggestions of other music identification / search websites I can try?
