Singer George Michael is dead at the age of 53. His publicist says the former Wham! singer died peacefully at his home.
Michael's family is asking for privacy in their difficult time. The BBC reports that authorities visited his house in Oxfordshire, England this afternoon. Police say he didn't die under suspicious circumstances.
"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," his publicist said in a statement. "The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."
Aside from suffering from pneumonia in 2011, Michael appeared to steer clear of health complications. Throughout his career, the singer, who was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, sold over 80 million records worldwide during his time with Wham! in the 1980s as well as his solo career.
