Took me awhile to get into the new album.
At first felt it was too much rehash of old ideas.
However, after a few listens there are a bunch of good songs , nice melodies and some interesting arrangements.

Also got to catch them at the Beacon Theater, NYC. Great mix of new and old songs and the Decemberists always put on a great live show.

Probably my favorite “2000 band”
Picaresque, Crane Wife, The Hazards of Love, The King Is Dead. Beautiful, really interesting music and lyrics on most of their albums.
My story is I took a gamble on Picaresque and Crane Wife but when Hazards Of Love was released, I resisted all contact with it. Their tour would bring them to my city and I wanted the experience of hearing them play it live before I listened to any of it or bought it. I was very patient, my wife and I went to the concert and enjoyed it immensely and then afterwards, I bought the album to relive the concert experience.
I highly recommend any two of the albums I mentioned as a starting point if you have any interest in listening to The Decemberists.
