One of the first rock albums to incorporate violin was High Tide's Sea Shanties. A prog album with heavy tendencies, perhaps even bold enough to call itself proto-metal. It's a really killer underground album and was given a very distinct edge through guitarist Tony Hill's bleak lyrics and doomy, Morrison-esque vocals, and violinist Simon House's rivaling interplay with the guitar work.
