Celebrating 1967

It was 40 years ago today...1967 is my favorite music year of all. I was in fact listening that year (10 years old I was, and very tuned into pop and rock radio). It was the year of Sgt. Pepper, of Are You Experienced?, of Forever Changes (which I only discovered a few years ago!), of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd. (perhaps the most underrated of all psychedelic era albums because it was by--gulp!--the Monkees, but it's fabulous!), and a host of incredible singles, many of them by "one hit wonder" bands and artists who were never heard from again.

It was an incredible year for music "scenes" such as the San Francisco ferment that gave us the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin. There were also incredible music scenes in New York (the Velvets, of course) and Memphis (Stax/Voltz and the incredible session scene that grew around that label and the legendary Ardent Studios), Muscle Shoals, Alabama (the recording home of Aretha Franklin among others), Nashville (where Dylan had recorded Blonde on Blonde the previous year and home of some truly impressive C&W recordings back when country music meant something)...I could go on and on...

My sister loved him too. She about drove us crazy. She bought the The Monkees album and played it constantly. Then she moved on to Rubber Soul by The Beatles. The Monkees was good but played to much. The Beatles was great and still is.
In 1967 there were not many female artists to have a crush on though. Janis Joplin no, Mama Cass definately no. Now Michele Phillips looked pretty good.

Now Lulu was one beautiful babe...but I don't think I ever had a childhood crush on a female singer. Does anyone remember Lulu's recording of Neil Diamond's "The Boat That I Row" (which was on the flip side of "To Sir With Love")? That was one rockin' track.

Another great chick from the 60s was Jackie DeShannon ("What The World Needs Now Is Love" and "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", among others). She was one of the first real "singer-songwriters", but most of her big hits were written by others.

It's hard to believe that in '67 the Monkees got more airplay than the Beatles. I know it didn't reach #1, but "Pleasant Valley Sunday" was one of my favorite records of that year on radio.

There was some poll done back then awarding the Bucs most played band in 1967.

That may have been a poll done in the region surrounding their hometown of Chicago (the rock radio scene was very "regional" in those times). I'd have a hard time believing that they were the most played band in America that year. That said, they did some fine records, and I always enjoyed their music.

How about making our own top 10 lists for 1967. I will make mine for both albums and singles and list them tomorrow. I have done several searches and it's pretty easy to top singles and album lists for 1967. I use a web site "Alaskajim.com" also for help. They have all kinds of music lists in there. A word of warning though. If you go in there you better have a good pop-up blocker.
