Boxcar Willie, also known as the singing hobo, was one of the most famous "invented hobo" stage characters of his time. Boxcar Willie was originally a character in one of his ballads, and Lecil later adopted this as his permanent name.

Boxcar Willie also has a very famous first cousin, Tommy Lee Jones.

He was cool! I remember him making the rounds on all of the popular TV Variety shows back in the day!

Happy Birthday Willie!

I remember him the same as Garrett, from showing up on the TV show circuit. Used to go to a bar here called "Boxcar Willies" right across the street from the massive CN rail yard in the city. Couldn't name a song of his if my life depended on it though.

I too remember growing up watching him on TV. My father was a big fan and his appearances on the television always created good memories.

He had 34 Gold Albums and 5 Platinum Albums. Can't deny his popularity.

I see "King of the Road" as one the vids Magic posted, but to me that will always be Roger Miller's song...I remember it as one the first songs I ever learned all the words to when I was a youngster.

Re: In Memory of Boxcar Willie.

Maybe but when I was watching CBC(We only had one channel back then) on Sunday when "The Tommy Hunter Show" was on, that's when I saw Roger Miller sing that song, and it's stuck with me ever since. He used to get all the most famous Country stars on his show, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Willie, Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly, Patsy Cline...I'd have to say looking back I learned more about old country watching that show with Dad than any other source.

Re: In Memory of Boxcar Willie.

That would probably be like the Grand Ole Opry show that was televised here. Willie was on the Opry a lot .......

I'll play that song tomorrow morning, right now I'm playing some Ted Nugent.

I used to watch the Opry once in while, but we had to wait until our 2nd TV channel came online, CTV, they carried that one. :heheh:

You know I can't remember Wabash Cannonball, it sounds familiar but I can't be sure.
