Re: The OFFICIAL Boston Thread

I'm a pretty big fan. I think their debut, Don't Look Back, and most of Third Stage are all top notch. Honestly, after Third Stage I didn't pay much attention. I've seen Boston 2 or 3 times. The last time was in 2003 and it was incredible. Of course they had like 9 people onstage and everybody but Tom Scholz and the drummer sang. And they had the potential for as many as 5 guitarists at any given time...but it sounded just like the albums. Brad Delp sang most of the lead vocals and Fran Cosmo sang a few tunes. The singing, playing, and live sound were impeccable.
I remember well when their debut came out. I was 13 and bought the 8-track soon after it came out. My friends and I all dug it and Boston was a band that passed the mom & dad sniff test for what was listenable in the car - BONUS!
I think it's unfortunate that their career momentum was hampered by fighting, lawsuits, etc.
I like Boston's sound. They're kinda one-dimensional as far as style but they're about the best at that style.
Their debut is classic but I like Don't Look Back just as much.

Re: The OFFICIAL Boston Thread

I have much love for Boston and I'm just going to say what everyone is thinking which is that their debut albums is an absolutely masterful album and a bench mark they were bound to never reach again. Brad Delp is one of my favorite singers ever and I think Tom Scholz is very unappreciated as a musician.

"More Than a Feeling" is one of my favorite songs ever.

"Smokin'" is such a great rocker and has one of my favorite instrumental breaks ever.

The Brad Delp penned "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" is such an underrated song from their debut. It honestly is one of my favorite songs from it. I'm thinking top 3 even.

"A Man I'll Never Be" is my favorite Boston song post-their debut.

Cosmic, I agree with everything you say about those songs!
It always feels a bit strange to me at times living through a band when they started & sometimes I take music for granted years later. I'll hear songs like More Than a Feeling & Piece of Mind nowadays & look at them as they are just another good Classic Rock song which they are but man when I first discovered that debut album in the 70's it was something else. It was the great songs & man did that album cover blow me away. I loved the sound of that record, it was just so polished & clean sounding & I used to just lay back in bed & stare at that album cover(It was such a cool cover!)!

I will say though, I was disappointed with the 'Don't Look Back' album when it first came out because the build up for the record was so great. It seemed so far in between those first 2 records & because the debut did so well I just couldn't wait for the next one. All I kept reading was that the band was working on the new album (for 2 years!). I did like the album but from what I was reading I figured this would be just as good if not better than the debut. One stupid thing I did back then was not go see them in concert because (Get This!!) some country & western singer named Sammy Hagar was opening!!! I never heard Sammy Hagar but because of his name I thought he was a C&W artist!

I really thought Barry Goudreau's s/t solo record (featuring Brad Delp & Sib Hashian) was amazing & I actually prefer it to 'Dont Look Back'. I also recommend last year's album by Ernie & the Automatics 'Low Expectations' which features Goudreau & Hashian. It don't sound like Boston but it's got a real cool vibe to it

I love Boston, the debut and Third Stage are excellent, I don't like Don't look back all that much, but there are some very nice tunes on it..

and that third song you posted,Bucky, is awesome:grinthumb

Re: The OFFICIAL Boston Thread

I was introduced from Boston through Grand Theft Auto, and since first hearing Smokin' at the tender age of 15 I didn't think much of them. But as I grew older and matured more, I grew to like Boston more and currently they're never far from my playlist or mp3 player. There is nothing in the world like belting out some Boston while driving down the highway, and even though I've only got a greatest hits album from them I don't mind at all because I love every song! :cheers2

My favourite though? Would definitely have to be Foreplay/Long Time:

I really enjoy Walk On, and I know there is no Brad Delp, but it's still top stuff in my book!
