I've heard this on the radio a couple of times over the last week or two (Bob Seger is coming to Cleveland in a little bit so his songs are getting massive airplay). I've heard both Rod Stewart and Bob's cover of it and while neither is bad I still like Tom Waits' original the most.

I think I actually heard the Bob had recorded his cover at the same time that Rod Stewart did but because Rod's was a huge hit he decided not to release it.

You're right Cosmic. Seger already had his version in the can, but was beaten to the finish by Rod..........so Seger decided to wait 20 years.

Rockin' Robert definitely made it his own, however.
