Bob Dylan's debut album, Bob Dylan, turns 60 years old March 2022.

Man of Constant Sorrow

The above song was not a Bob Dylan original, but recorded in 1928....with doubts of who was the original songwriter at that time. However, it was made famous by The Soggy Bottom Boys in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou. Some thought that George Clooney was the vocalist, but he wasn't. The vocalist was Dan Tyminski, who is a member of Alison Krauss's band. The song won CMA single of the year in 2001, a Grammy in 2002, and has sold over 1 million copies in the USA.

I recently read Joni Mitchell's interview in2010 where she said she thought Dylan was not authentic and that he copied some old folkies/bluesman and created a persona and style that was really not him. She also pointed out multiple instances where he 'borrowed' lines of poetry and melodies from old songs.

Article on him by Sean Wilentz

There are other pieces on this idea that Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman) 'borrowed' his persona and style to create himself as an iconic folk troubadour. Indeed many claim he took his last name from Dylan Thomas a Welsh poet.
I do like many of his lps and songs though I can see that a young man from Minnesota certainly had to create an image other than that to be an American folkie.
Thoughts ....? Any one want to defend Dylan or out him or what....?

Borrowed, stolen, fake…it doesn’t really matter. He became a folkie icon.

Here’s the thing, Dylan and many more before and to come after him, create a stage persona. It’s part of being an artist.

Plagiarism has taken place many times in the music industry. Dylan has been sued several times for infringement, but I don’t think anyone ever won a suit against him. In fact, I think he called his accusers “wussies”.

Right now I’d say my fav by Dylan is “Lay Lady Lay”. Sexy song! One of the songs I actually like his voice.

His Biograph box set hits the high points for me. I’m really glad I have it. There is a lot of his stuff I do not like but this box set is really satisfying to me. I think there are a few well known songs that are not included in this collection but I listen to at least the first two compact discs from the collection much more than any of his studio albums for sure. It’s a must have if you are even a casual fan.
It really is a rare case when an anthology collection ultimately delivers so much and for me at least is so complete.

Decent collection.....I bought the Essential Dylan on cd years ago and also have 5 of his early lps (1965-9) on old vinyl................., as well as Blood On The Tracks and Basement Tapes with The Band.....two of his best imho.

Another favorite...much of Blood On THe Tracks is allegedly about his marriage and falling apart from his wife Sara Lownds/Dylan
