Well I have to say there isn't much in the way of occult/satanic lyrics pre-1970. What surprised me the most was that the blues has more references than rock. There's a few examples from rock but not much. Some voodoo in jazz and other ethnic folk and some country as thier is pagan references in alot of other genres as well. All in all I was very surprised. More ambience and mood in the sound than in the lyrics pertaining to evil, the devil, doom, etc.

Pete Seeger-Folk
Johnny Cash-Country
Miles Davis-Jazz
Grateful Dead-Rock
Robert Johnson, Skip James-Blues

I'm sure there is more out there but one has to put in the time and research.

There a few tunes in reference. "A Beast In Me" off the top of my head. I think Johnny uses the devil in reference in regards to his "inner demons", man vs himself, his addiction. Some Christians believe that there is no devil, Satan, the beast as they believe it's more of a personal struggle in the mind, for lack of a better statement.

There are other musicians that practice certain dogmas, religion, beliefs, etc. but isn't so obvious in thier lyrical content however everybody has thier own interpretations. Robert Fripp and his beliefs in Wica, Jim Morrison, some of the Stones, Page and Plant dabbling in the occult are a few examples.

Here's a couple tunes I remembered while I was working outside. First is the Sonics from Seattle with thier garage proto-punk track "The Witch" from 1965 and second is "Fire" from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown(1968). Nolo, I don't think I have to tell you who is on keys.

I know it's stretching it, but hey everything is relative.

Much ado is made about Celtic Frost but I frankly prefer Hellhammer. Very cool band.
