I was just wondering how many proto-black metal and FWOBM bands there are and so far I found... not many of them. Don't be confused with Norwegian second wave of black metal.

Some proto-black metal.

(this one probably the earliest)
Cromagnon

Coven

Black Widow

And some FWOBM.

Venom

Bathory

KAT

Torr

Bulldozer

Hellhammer

Celtic Frost

Mercyful Fate

Poison

Anyone know more? :D

I am not a fan of this brand of metal generally speaking Nolo but I think Bob, LOU and Wolf will have something to add for you to consider.

I'll take a look at my last.fm and my collection and will see if I have anything to add in here. I've given black metal a listen from time to time, so i'm sure I have something to offer.

I'll also try to keep it specifically to what you are looking for, but there may be some that aren't.

P&C, surely doesn't have to be that "old" black metal. Some of the new bands, that keeps this type of climate is fine for me, for example Bewitched.

LG, I know your opinion on that, so you're justified. :D

Hmm... first 4 songs are more likely to be in a proggy vein than black metal. But Leviathan does have that black metal, but unfortunately I would rather consider it as second wave of black metal. But anyway good effort, P&C. :grinthumb

Oh, and here's another proto-BM, Jacula. At least I think it can be credited as occult rock.

Interesting thread Nololob.......The origins of Black metal . Its interesting that you have mentioned early occult rock bands eg. Black Widow etc, but to be fair IMO I very much doubt 1st or second wave Black metal bands used these as influence. I dont think there is a answer...so we just have opinions.
I always thought Black metal was spawned from 80s NWOBHM bands VENOM,ANGELWITCH,HELL,SABBAT etc who took the doomy Sabbath riffs and maybe speeded them up a bit.
Ahh VENOM bless I think we all agree like them or not were HIGHLY influential !!:grinthumb
Influential to HELLHAMMER/ CELTIC FROST, BATHORY......and these early pioneers from Norway MAYHEM....who are worth a mention, highly regarded by black metal fans

Don't listen to much black metal but I gotta admit some of the groups in the genre have the best band names around. I love the names Venom and Black Widow.
