^^ Everything from "Satanica" onwards is top notch. I think the previous releases are fun and certainly belong in anyone’s Behemoth collection, but in retrospect, they are pretty average black metal albums in my book. No classics by any means. I'm with @Vader concerning Demigod. That one's my favourite too.

Yeah , defintely from Satanica on... great stuff. The Black Metal is pretty average as you say Sharp Dressed Man..it's amazing how they morphed from an OK / Good Black Metal band to such an amazing Blackened Death Metal band so quickly. Though I do think that Pandemonic Incantations was a big step up from the first three Black Metal releases.

You are right, but it was more of a transiation record and not quite on par with what was to follow!

Yeah, totally agree. Not quite up to pare with the onslaught of quality of the material that follows it but an album I enjoy a lot none the less. But yeah, not in the same category at all.

Their black metal albums are way better than they get given credit for imo.

^^^ They are definitely listenable and I like them but I could never put them up there with what I consider the cream of the Black Metal crop Watain, Emperor, Enslaved, Marduk etc.
On the other hand their Death Metal is IMO top shelf material. Thus the disparity.
It's not that I feel their Black Metal is bad just that theIr Death Metal Is such huge leap forward.

Honestly, compared to most classic black metal albums, I disagree.

They are not bad albums by any means, but I really cannot call them anything else than average, as they have absolutely no identity. Except for someone who knows the songs by heart, there is no way anyone would be able to listen to them and say, yeah, this is definitely Behemoth. No, they sound like a lot of, for a lack of better term, second-rate black metal from that period.

I won't argue that but I just think they are quite underappreciated in general.

The Satanist is one of their best imo and that has a lot of black metal to it.

All of their Death Metal albums have a Black influence. What the two of us are talking about is the pure Black early albums ...and I agree w/ SDM they are a bit personality-less. They are just sort of Generic Black Metal.
