What American English sounds like to foreigners.

I think it says something about Italy that this was actually a MASSIVE hit over there; practically anyone in that country who is old enough to remember the year 1970 probably remembers this. I've had this stuck in my head since approximately August of 2009.

    Instrumental Rock Anyone?

Surprised nobody's mentioned Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" yet, unless I somehow missed it. Classic riff.

Most Overplayed Classic Rock songs on today's Radio?

I am stunned that there aren't more votes for "Brown-Eyed Girl". I am 29 years old and that song has been overplayed on oldies radio for literally as long as I can remember... I would rather listen to ANY of the other songs on this list than hear "Brown-Eyed Girl" for the nineteen-thousandth time.

2012 Rock and Roll HOF Nominees

Considering that Rolling Stone has very close ties with the Hall of Flimflam, I'm not surprised they still haven't inducted Rush. That magazine has always had a love/hate relationship with that band, and I wouldn't be surprised if politics had something to do with it... it seems like back when...

Help me out...Recommend 3 bands to me

Here's my three recommendations. It's too hard for me to pick any specific albums by each, but I'll make a few suggestions. Pink Floyd -- You mentioned them, and if you're looking for a band with great lyrics and a good bassist (Roger Waters) they're worth digging into. There's way more to...

    Beat Club

I wouldn't even have known about these guys if I hadn't found their Beat Club performances on Youtube. Proof that Zappa was not the only guy playing bats__t punk rock in 1966: LJTGimyf0r8 hXUjo7zcifQ

    Biggest Music What Ifs ______

How would the rock landscape have changed if one or more of these books had never reached print? Naked Lunch, William S. Burroughs On the Road, Jack Kerouac Howl and Other Poems, Allen Ginsberg Think carefully about this one. It may go deeper than it first appears... The Beats kicked the door...

Songs You Didn't Want Your Parents To Hear When You Were A Teen

Most of my musical taste was influenced by my dad -- I rarely catch myself listening to something he wouldn't have liked. I admit my parents never saw the appeal of The Prodigy when I got into them (although my mom says she finds the Chemical Brothers strangely hypnotic), but they had bigger...

    Underrated bands of the 80's

Disappointed to see nobody mentioning Wall of Voodoo here. Despite their one (novelty) hit, they had something unique. They dove head first into the New Wave and came out with a psychotic, hypnotic mishmash of Devo, Split Enz, and (of all things) Ennio Morricone -- it was completely different...

    Influential Jazz Artists?

I think it's best if I stick to the ones that had an influence on my own tastes in jazz: Dave Brubeck (the first jazz artist I listened to) Thelonious Monk Herbie Hancock Charles Mingus Paul Desmond John Coltrane The Duke And as far as jazz drummers go, I'd put the late great Joe Morello up...

    Thelonious Monk

Really, you can pick a Monk album almost at random if you're looking to get into him -- there's pieces of genius spread out over his entire discography. I suppose one good place to start would be with Columbia's old Greatest Hits compilation, or with his Coltrane collaborations. A few years ago...

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (Official Thread)

re: The Official Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Thread Somebody mentioned Don's other collaborations with Frank Zappa. I have to say that no Beefheart education is complete without hearing his contributions to Zappa's Bongo Fury album. 6frfeIdln6Y BTW I'm the guy whose wife says...
