    On Being Derivative and Commercial

Why, thank you, MW! :) You may not like me much, but rest assured I won't stoop to using vulgar language toward you. Oh, I might say something like "Quit posting BS"---but you won't see me posting things like "FU" etc. As you wisely mentioned a little bit ago, those who don't like me...

    On Being Derivative and Commercial

Hard facts are hard facts. My amount of protest does nothing to change that. If a person says that Abraham Lincoln was the first President of the United States, and somebody protests by shouting at the top of their lungs for an hour that it was George Washington--their level of protest does...

    On Being Derivative and Commercial

Uh, I was just agreeing with the analogy you made regarding the Christmas trees. If you want to talk about Crowley etc., that's your own business. Go for it. ;) I never claimed Zep, Page etc. were perfect--they're not even my favorite rock band. I have no problem with somebody bashing them...

Well said, newdawnfades! I agree with virtually everything you said.

    On Being Derivative and Commercial

Actually you make a good point, Martha. Was Zep wrong to lift the basic tune and some of the lyrics to Willie Dixon's "You Need Love"? Absolutely! But Zep's version was a substantial remake, with faster tempo; Page adding some new licks and riffs; modified lyrics; synthesizer; Bonham's...

Mike Love, True Genius of the Beach Boys!!!

"Pet Sounds" was one of the most influential albums in the entire history of the Rock era. Paul McCartney has stated that "Pet Sounds" is his favorite album ever, and "God Only Knows" (from PS) his favorite song. But as Martha explained, you either get it or you don't. Some will listen to...

Who Best Represented The Spirit of RocknRoll??

50s--Elvis 60s--Beatles 70s--Zeppelin 80s--AC/DC Overall--Elvis To those in this thread who questioned the selection of Elvis, I'll let these guys respond:

Hmmmmm. Two pigs and a jackass. I just can't figure it out. :D ;)

Worst Drummer In A 70s Rock Band

Re: Worse Drummer In A 70s Rock Band The average 70's rock drummer could play a heckuva lot better than most of the guys today.

You're right about that, Doc! ;)

You're getting colder. Think of a hog lot, and you'll be getting warmer. :D

Worst Drummer In A 70s Rock Band

Re: Worse Drummer In A 70s Rock Band You got that right! Drugs, booze and age have taken their toll on Bill--who's not in good health anymore. But in the 70's, he was one of the most creative and best rock drummers out there.

    Rush

I wouldn't say that. Rush has been discussed a lot on various music forums over the years. So many people are just looking for a fresher topic.

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

They should at least be intellectually honest and rename it "The Pop Music Hall of Fame". Some of the acts getting in have virtually nothing to do with rock. There's a lot of political correctness involved in the selections.

Worst Drummer In A 70s Rock Band

Re: Worse Drummer In A 70s Rock Band Bill Ward was an excellent rock drummer.

Best Forgotten Bands of the 70's.

Forgotten?! Many of the classic rock stations in my state play the first five you mentioned almost every day. I can hardly turn on a classic rock station without hearing Boston.

Hot Rocks. It brings back a lot of fond memories for me.

Not trying to nitpick, but that's "Clarksville". ;)

    All Time Lows

He had some good stuff in the 70's, though most of his later output leaves a lot to be desired. A few of his later songs, like "Forever Young", were decent.

I've Come to Bury The Monkees, NOT to Praise Them!

I neither love nor hate them. Their TV show was too silly for my taste, but I've got to admit that they had some very listenable songs. I've heard pop music that was noticeably worse. I'd rate them about average for the pop bands of that time.

    Will Blues Die?

The Blues will never die out completely. It will always have a small, fiercely dedicated fanbase--like classical, jazz and many other great music genres. The biggest FM classic rock station in my area has an excellent blues program every weekend, which is pretty popular.

    Rush

A great band. One of the finest rock trios ever. Peart is certainly one of the best rock drummers ever, though I couldn't rate him #1.

Mike Love, True Genius of the Beach Boys!!!

Is that his brain, or just a big lump from being beaten in the head by irate Brian Wilson and Beatles fans, who can't stand him being such a poseur? :)
