    MC5 (Official Thread)

Website Kick Out the Jams (1969) Back in the USA (1970) High Time (1971) You had to see the MC-5 live to appreciate them when they kicked out the jams. It was like a combination of the loudest rock you've ever heard combined with a downhome, old fashioned revival meeting. From the...

    Peter & Gordon (Official Thread)

Re: Peter & Gordon Their cover of Buddy Holly's True Love Ways is one of my favorites. A little lusher than Holly's original and it works. Their success wasn't hurt by Peter Asher's (his sister Jane was Paul's love interest) roomate at the time, Paul McCartney. They shared a garret in the...

Gary Lewis & the Playboys (Official Thread)

Re: Gary Lewis & the Playboys Gary Lewis was drafted and sent to Viet Nam right at the height of his popularity. By the time he returned, his kind of music was passe. Somewhere I remember reading that his experience in SE Asia had a profound negative effect on him. I saw then perform at...

    Forgotten Bands of the Sixties

Yes, definitely the Spoonful. They had a unique sound that originated with jug band music, but they could be heavy, too. Witness Summer in the Citywritten by John Sebastian's brother, Mark as a poem while a college student. The Lovin Spoonful disintegrated when Zal Yanovsky agreed to rat out...

    Soul and R & B of the 60's

I can't believe no one is talking about Motown where Soul was invented. Berry Gordy, Smoky, Holland, Dozier, Holland and the Funk Brothers providing words and music. For about ten years, the Motown Studio on Grand Boulevard turned out one hit after another. When Gordy moved Motown to LA the...

    I am the walrus!

As i recall, when Lennon was writing Walrus, he had a sheet a paper in a typewriter (what the hell is that?) and added lines over a period of several days, perhaps weeks. It wasn't flow of consciousness and there was no plan. John liked words and enjoyed word play. Lyrically, Walrus is more a...

My list of favourite garage rock tracks from the sixties!

Well, when I think of garage bands, I think of young teens playing in their first band. There are no Marshall stacks, most of the guitars are from Japan and two of you are plugged into the same underpowered amp along with the sole microphone. A drummer was a scarce luxury and always hard to...

My list of favourite garage rock tracks from the sixties!

When I think of garage bands, I think three chord songs with a bridge ala Ramones. I played in plenty of them starting at fifteen. Some of those songs are pretty complex for young teens to be knocking out. But...whatever, it was fun to read.

    Marianne Faithful (Official Thread)

Re: Marianne Faithful According to her autobiography, she wrote Sister Morphine, but was uncredited. There is also a connection between Marianne, her new lover Jean deBreteuil, and the death of Jim Morrison, but you'd have to read my book to learn that. Did the counter-culture die or was...

The Dave Clark Five! (Official Thread)

    All Along the Watchtower

XTC reminds me of Talking Heads a bit. Never heard that cover, but I have to admit, they made it their own. This link will tell you all you ever wanted to know about the tune. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Along_the_Watchtower

The Dave Clark Five! (Official Thread)

Re: The Dave Clark Five! In late '64, early '65, the Beatles were not the legend they became. Their audience was still made up of primarily, young teens. It wasn't until Revolver and Rubber Soul that they began to appeal to a broader audience. Part of what happened is that they, and their...

Has Knowing Too Much Really Soured You On Some Musicians?

When I learned John Lennon almost killed a guy with a shovel at Macca's 21st birthday party, I realized he was a man first, Beatle John second.

    Jackie DeShannon with the Byrds

You have to remember that Jackie told us that, "What the world needs now, is love, sweet love." This was several years before Lennon told us, "All you need is love." A great lady and artist!

    Spirit (Official Thread)

Re: Spirit These guys were great, rock with a jazz influence. Almost like Blue Cheer meets Argent. When all those skinny English boys were playing the blues, Spirit was one of the first to carve their own niche. Live, they were a force to be reckoned with. There's a connection to Heart and...

Morrison went to Paris for the same reason Roman Polanski went, they don't prosecute people for what we in the US call, "sex crimes."

    Janis Joplin RIP

Re: R.I.P. Janis Joplin It seemed that JJ was either at her best or worst when performing live. She had been drinking tequilla and vodka and snorting heroin before going on stage at Woodstock. It wasn't one of her best performances, but the crowd cheered anyhow. They didn't put it into the...

The Dave Clark Five! (Official Thread)

Re: The Dave Clark Five! The competition between all these English Invasion bands was intense. The Beatles position at that time was by no means assured. Very few of the invasion bands lasted longer than a few singles in the US charts. The DC-5 never made the transition bands like the Stones...
