When the band had Lee, Moody and Hodges they were at their peak, IMHO.
Hodges's stuff is more pop, but with more depth...he has gone on to write a ton of pop hits
His Trading Yesterday band had so much potential

I had always written him off as teeny bopper crap
Then I listened to summertime to hear James Burton create the riff for Black Night and other songs (Blues Magoos ain't got nothin yet)
The. I heard Traveling Man, Mary Lou, Milk Cow Blues, Believe what you say etc...
The title track is one of the best songs the band has ever done
After Back in Black, the band did get more formulaic, (but the song FTATR is not formulaic)...Their older stuff has more variety in sound.
Standout tracks here are FTATR! snowballed, let's get it up (cheesy, but fun)...
This album stands the test of time...great album
I always thought the plant Coverdale comparisons were way overblown....Coverdale has some deep soulful stuff and some gruff stuff that plant does not, while plant has that nasally, frantic, immediate epic stuff that Coverdale does not, even...
