The Rolling Stones are adding three previously unreleased songs to an expanded version of Goats Head Soup.

The deluxe two-disc CD and vinyl editions of the murky, somewhat bloated 1973 album will be released on Sept. 4. They will include 10 rarities and alternative mixes, including the previously unreleased tracks "Scarlet," "All the Rage" and the project's lead single, "Criss Cross." Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page contributes guitar to "Scarlet," which also features Rick Grech of Blind Faith on bass.

"I really feel close to this album, and I really put all I had into it," Mick Jagger said in a statement announcing the new set's release. "I guess it comes across that I'm more into the songs." Eight of Goat Head Soup's original 10 songs were recorded in one four-week recording session in Jamaica, which Keith Richards notes "was one of the few places that would let us all in" at the time.

In addition to those 10 tracks, the four-disc vinyl and CD box set editions will also include the 1973 live album The Brussels Affair, which was previously available as two limited-edition vinyl box sets in 2012 that cost at least $750.

Interesting comments coming from Mick as I always thought Goats Head Soup was a bit of a 'throw away' album with some 'filler tracks' on it more so than on previous Stones albums although that's just my own opinion?. As a Rolling stones album I actually quite like it more so than the next album after GHS It's Only Rock & Roll anyway I shall buy the deluxe two-disc CD regardless.

It figures that the Stones would like recording in Jamaica but I read somewhere several months ago before it was announced that GHS was to be re-released in deluxe form that the band while recording the album in Jamaica were having to handout large sums of money to various parties who showed up at the studio after hearing that the Rolling Stones were 'in town' recording a new album just to keep the peace?.

Many many great memories of this 1973 offering...and not suprised to see it rear it Goats Head once more..Jim Horn excels on this album..as do all the wingmen of the Stones at this time. Such was the quality of songs here...that two ended up eventually on Tattoo You.
I bought 'Save Me' on a bootleg single yonkers ago.. 'companied with a funkier 'Dancing With Mr.D'
First discovered this golden gatefold sleeve at an all-night houseparty '74...folks had drifted to other rooms for some nocturnal gymnastics...and me true to form ended up with a pint bottle and the turntable...with a huge parrot on his perch for company- some bozo had fed it cola flavoured Spangle candy and it was off it's parrot like tits!
So after i played some Sparks and a little Sweet..i toked on a fat joint and slipped this album on the Garrard deck...a true wow moment!
I was hooked and felt not so pissed off at not bagging that blonde in the knee high boots!
46 years later owning six various copies...still a patriot of GHS and the Stones as a whole.
This is a slightly different mix, with Mick Taylor being right on the money...really was their banker from '69 -'74.

Blues/rocker Johnny Winter covered Silver Train which appeared on Johnny's Still Alive And Well album in 1973 and my opinion Johnny's version is slightly heavier and faster and therefore superior to the Stones album version. Angie is alright but it isn't a particular favourite Stones song of mine although it's probably the albums best known song as well as being a hit single. Star Star (or Starfucker) is a good up tempo song and Dancing With Mr.D plods along in a 'nice groove' but the remaining tracks like Winter, 100 years, Coming Down Hard, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), Hide Your Love & Can You Hear The Music occasionally sounds like 'filler' to me but over overall it's an 'ok' album but coming on the back of Exile On Main Street & Sticky Fingers it pales slightly in comparison to those two albums. As far as I am aware only Dancing With Mr.D along with Angie & Star Star were the only songs that were performed live by the band which mite indicate that a lot of the album tracks weren't that playable in a live setting or they just weren't that good to be played live?.

On a minor point the original yellow'ish album gatefold cover of 'Jagger's face' wasn't that much to look at and maybe the inside picture of a 'goats head in a pot of water/soup' would have been a better choice as the front cover?.

In 1975 i caught the wonder wingmen live with the Stones.
Jim Horn, Ollie Brown, Billy Preston, Bobby Keyes, Stu, and Mick Taylor with an affro wig ass bumping with Billy Preston...Jagger was pissed...as the crowd went bananas!
Doo Doo, Starfucker,Angie, Dancing and 100 Years i have caught live.

I was walking through Camden Town yesterday (Thursday) and I noticed a BIG POSTER advertising the forthcoming GOATS HEAD SOUP reissue with the boys pictures from the 1973 album cover featuring Mick, Keith, Bill, Charlie & Mick Taylor with
THE ROLLING STONES written in BIG RED LETTERS ACROSS IT and the 'Stones tongue logo' of course and I must admit that it looked pretty cool dudes.

^ Sounds like something i would have pinched E-Z..not the first time i've lifted a Stones poster!
Seem to recall this November '72 recordings were dubbed 'The Goats Head Patties'..but the name was changed when mixing down and the cover artwork was sorted...this was also Jimmy Millers last production...as he too was reliable on constant pharmacy assistance. However story goes that Miller and Johns almost had a blistering version of Jaggers vocals on Winter - but Bianca was ringing the studio constantly...and when Mick returned to the mic...the vibe was lost.
Seperately was a great instrumental that was recorded at the Dynamic Studio...maybe the Glimmer Twins viewed Coming Down Again a little too similar to Through The Lonely Nights...which was kept on ice and reworked later in Munich and ended up as the flipside to It's Only Rock 'n' Roll a year later.

Tops resurfaced 8 years later on Tattoo You- and Mick Taylor went to court on this one..citeing that no mention of him is mentioned in the 1981 album credits...
