The Stones easily get my vote in this matchup. Really not a fan of anything that The Who did in the 60's (very very little of it I'd play on purpose)
I kind of know what you mean Lynch up to a point The Who's 1960s singles were all pretty good 'pop songs' but the albums weren't that great until they released Tommy in 1969 then they were on a roll for 2-3 years releasing Live At Leeds, Who's Next & Quadrophenia. The two moon albums following Quadrophenia being The Who By Numbers & Who Are You were pretty average albums I thought although to be fair maybe I didn't listen to either albums as closely as I should have done?. I like Who Are You the song though.

I read a couple of years ago in a old Pete Townsend interview possibly from the 1970s that what got up his nose was when Jimi Hendrix was asked what Who songs did Jimi like and Jimi said that he liked Boris The Spider which of course was John Entwistles song. Pete wasn't overly impressed. ;)
