Well friends, after an eight month absence, it’s great to be back again. I wish I could tell you that I was making my way in the world in search of fame and fortune, or, perhaps, that I was engaged in some noble and righteous cause, but the truth is that I simply forget my password. Yeah, I know there’s a thing to click on to reset your password. Believe me, I tried that several times, but never got an email from the board with the link on how to do it. And so, I basically had two choices – create a new username and email address, or keep my old one and enter different passwords until I got it right. I picked the latter, and after many tries (and locking up my account as a result) it finally came to me.
I am Guitar George, and I still don’t know all the chords, but practice makes perfect so there’s always hope. I’ve traded in my lava lamp avatar for a CBGB's one to keep the spirit alive. For those of you who are already familiar with “The Home of Underground Rock”, no explanation is necessary; for those of you who aren’t – no explanation will do. I consider myself a student of music, and song compilations are my thing. I decided to return with a 90’s Playlist. Yeah, I know, I know …. not another 90’s Playlist, sheesh ! I get it, alright ? I get it. But this one comes with pictures ! Some songs are obvious, some aren’t, and some you would rather forget, but they all got air time on Modern Rock radio and/or MTV back in the day, so let’s get to it.
Where to start ? Well, if I were a VH1 count down, I’d make you sit through ten freakin’ hours of programming and commercials to reach this point, but I say let’s start with the elephant in the room shall we ?
1. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana from "Nevermind" (1991).
What can I say or add about this song that you haven’t already heard a bazillion times over ? Let’s just call it what it was – the death knell of 80’s music. The times, they were a changing, folks … and it all began on September 29, 1991 when the video premiered on MTV, and the rest, as they say, was history. Here's nine more to whet the ol' appetite:
2. "Popular" by Nada Surf from "High/Low" (1996).
3. "Welcome To Paradise" by Green Day from "Dookie" (1994).
4. "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer from "Weezer (The Blue Album)" (1994).
5. "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette from "Jagged Little Pill" (1995).
6. "Daughter" by Pearl Jam from "Vs." (1993).
7. "So Much To Say" by The Dave Matthews Band from "Crash" (1996).
8. "Ready To Go" by Republica from "Republica" (1996).
9. "Swallowed" by Bush from "Razorblade Suitcase" (1996).
10. "3:00 AM" by Matchbox 20 from "Yourself Or Someone Like You" (1996).
That's ten down and about five hundred left to go. Stick around - we're just getting started ! Y'all come back now, ya hear ?
