So, as Thumper said, lets give them some gratitude. As I saw on this forum, the melodic symphonic metal bands are much appreciated. Paradise Lost was one of the pioneer bands that used the clean angelic woman voices vs. death grunt male voices. They started in the early 90s with a mediocre death metal album “Lost Paradise”. But just one year later, 1991, a touch of genius stroke the band and the “Gothic” album was born. A milestone for the death/doom/gothic metal genre, “Gothic” was maybe the first metal album who introduced the female voice in such a rough music. The album is not very catchy, is maybe kind of unfriendly and primitive but from “Gothic” on the sympho-metal genre started to spread. They did not necessarily follow this path as a female voice fronted band but the Pandora box was opened for many other followers.

“Shades of God” (1992) more doom metal oriented is marked by the doom/gothic anthem “As I Die”:

I consider “Icon” 1993, a true doom metal masterpiece, their climax.

“Draconian Times” 1995, their most successful achievement, contains more catchy songs, a much cleaner sound, with a normal voice (no growls):D.

…And then came the so called second era with a more commercial electronic sound and style with synthesizers and pop oriented. Not very bad, catchy tunes, focused to mainstream metal fans.

"One Second" (1997)

"Host" (1999) - with Depeche Mode influences :D

To be continued…

Re: Paradise Lost

I think Paradise Lost are a pretty good band. They came up on my Pandora once and I've been a casual listener to their work but from what I've heard I like them.

Re: Paradise Lost

I have a friend who is/was into them so I listened to it quite a bit, saw them live in 1996 too. Good band but it's been a long time since I listened to them...

Re: Paradise Lost

Bravo b.o.b. glad you took me up on this.. I'm adding some input here soon.. too busy right now but like I said.. these guys will make a impact on here...
Here's a short Bio on the band..

The British doom metal band Paradise Lost formed in Halifax, England in 1988; originally comprising vocalist Nick Holmes, lead guitarist Gregor Mackintosh, rhythm guitarist Aaron Aedy, bassist Steve Edmonson, and drummer Matthew Archer, the group recorded a pair of demo tapes, Drown in Darkness and Frozen Illusion, before signing with Peaceville Records to issue their debut album Lost Paradise in early 1990. The follow-up, 1991's Gothic, was the band's breakthrough, its dark production and orchestral elements setting them apart from the competition; a major European tour also expanded Paradise Lost's fanbase dramatically. Signing with the Music for Nations label, they returned in 1992 with Shades of God, considered by many to be their high-water mark; an EP, As I Die, appeared later that same year, complete with cover art by the incomparable Dave McKean. After 1993's Icon, Archer left Paradise Lost, and was replaced by drummer Lee Morris; Draconian Times followed in 1995, with One Second released two years later.

Re: Paradise Lost

I remember when Draconian Times came out, there was an expectation that they were gonna become a really big deal. Unfortunately that never happened, but glad that they're still putting out strong material.

Draconian Times is still my favourite album of theirs....

Re: Paradise Lost

After two more electro albums, "Believe in Nothing" (2001) and "Symbol of Life" (2002), Paradise Lost returns to a much heavier approach, with “Paradise Lost” (2005).

Mp edit: Video removed from Youtube

...and with “In Requiem” (2007) in a back to roots trend.

"Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us" (2009) certify the clear return to the doom-gothic style from the mid 90s.
