Yesterday was the 33rd Anniversary of Phil Lynott's tragic death. I've been playing Lizzy and paying a bit of homage to Phil who, as a bassist myself , has always been one of my favorite players out of the 70s era.
But it obviously wasn't just his bass prowless that gave Phil his appeal. He sang with such emotion and passion about the things he loved. And although he also deeply identified with his black heritage which he got from his father, Phil was filled with awe and wonder when it came to his Celtic heritage . His lyrical fascination with Irish mythology and history which is woven into Lizzy songs coupled with his soulful delivery gave Thin Lizzy something that was definitely all their own. I'm on a bit of an Irish jag though in this case it's Thin Lizzy's music fueling my binge not bottled spirits.

R.I.P. Phil Lynott ,may your inner demons be behind you now where ever you may be.

I remember Phil's passing back in January 1986 which didn't totally come as a surprise although when it happens in reality it is!. I remember it being reported in the UK media at the time that he had been admitted to hospital around Christmas 1985 and that he was in a bad way and I have always had a suspicious feeling that Phil wanted to die and possibly planned it to happen that way in a similar drug related rock star death way to Phil's BIG MUSICAL HERO Jimi Hendrix anyway that's always been my belief. Anyway Phil and Thin Lizzy with Phil leading the band for the rest of the 1980s & 1990s were a big loss to heavy rock music.

My all time favourite 'Lizzy' album that I play more than any of the others is CHINATOWN from 1980 I like that album from start to finish.

My second favourite album is BAD REPUTATION from 1978 and my joint third favourite albums are FIGHTING from 1975 & THUNDER AND LIGHTNING from 1983.

Also the early Thin Lizzy with Phil, Eric & Brian and the three albums that they produced between 1971-1973 are in there own way a good listen of that early 1970s progressive rock era before Eric left and they started to get more heavy as the 1970s wore on.

I'm right there with you E-Z, BUT what about Black Rose ? That would be my fave first, then Chinatown.

Yeah I know what you are saying cos many Thin Lizzy fans really like BLACK ROSE maybe in part cos Gary Moore plays on it but I can't take the 'Burundi style of drumming' on the track Do Anything You Want To Do I don't like it and therefore I tend to ignore the BLACK ROSE album altogether for that reason. I suppose it sounds a bit silly to ignore a whole album for that reason but I just don't listen to it although I do own the deluxe version of the BLACK ROSE double-cd I just don't ever play it though. Isn't the song Got To Give It Up on the BLACK ROSE cos that's a good song though and of course Waiting For A Alibi as well.

Yes, Got To Give It Up is one of the best on Black Rose, I also love Toughest Street In Town. At least Brian Downey makes up for that change in drumming style on Chinatown....

The Cowboy Song is my favorite Thin Lizzy song.
Yeah the Cowboy Song a great Thin Lizzy song that usually lead at the songs conclusion straight into The Boys Are Back In Town anyway I like the live version of the Cowboy Song when Phil sings "I move my fingers up and down up and down" that's pretty cool which Philo also sings on the live version of Rosalie on the Live And Dangerous album as well.

Thin Lizzy 1970-1983 are one of my all time top 5 favourite heavy rock bands.

I am not sure if people on here have heard this sad news that Phil's mother Philomena Lynott passed away on Wednesday 12th June 2019 aged 89 years old apparently she had been suffering from cancer for several years.

BBC radio 4 aired a short 5-6 minutes obituary piece about her life and her famous rock star son Phil on Friday 21st June 2019 between 4:25-4:30pm (London time).

RIP Philomena
