Music you've outgrown....?

I never listen to Nine Inch Nails anymore. It was just a phase I went through 10 years ago. The NIN forum I used to go to is completely dead.

I can't say I've "outgrown" anything. Perhaps like many here, I've simply had my fill of a few things and my interests have taken a different tangent in the ensuing years, leading me to a completely different place.

When I first got heavily into music it was The Beatles 24/7. Didn't want to know about anything else, but months later discovered the Stones, The Who, Hendrix, Cream (and other iterations of Clapton), etc, and that opened my world up to a bunch of other things, and now there's dozens of such acts, both rock and blues that I listen to while hardly paying the Beatles any mind at all anymore. It's not that I dislike them now, not at all...…...I just went at their music with such a fury so early that I took in all I could take in from them, and then it was on to other things. I may still enjoy throwing on a Beatles album now and again, but can't listen with the same level of interest and wonder and excitement now. My ears just aren't that new.

Since I run the gamut of genres, I don't get sick of much. I outgrew The Monkeys that one time, but, damn, that was like 1978 I haven't heard any classic rock in months; an album here or there, maybe some Mungo Jerry or somesuch. NPR lately and some Blues, because, you know, ******' Blues.

Maybe I'll know better the next time Classic Rock swings around in the genre cycle. I don't know, maybe The Outlaws?

What goes around comes around. There have been many artists and albums that I thought I'd lost interest in or outgrown only to find myself longing to hear their music at some later date. I've never been one for purging the collection so it's rarely been a problem, but I've been surprised at how much I've enjoyed rediscovering some of my hoary old high school favorites.

A lot of the 2000's garage rock I listened to in High School doesn't sound nearly as good today, aside from Is This It and maybe some Hives songs. Especially once you've listened to the late 70's punk and new wave that inspired it.

Born in 1960 and lived off a steady diet of the holy trinity of early 70s hard rock - Zeppelin/Purple/Sabbath. Zeppelin has held up 100%. Sabbath and Purple, not so much. Still love them but a lot of their stuff I don't listen to at all anymore.

I'm the exact opposite on those three bands. Much of Zeppelin's music still holds up, but Plant's vocals are like nails on a chalkboard to me much of the time. Not every song. Some are still so epic that I can get past his very average and whiny vocals, but some make me want to jab ice picks into my ears. This has been the case for me for several years, but it has gotten much worse with the advent of the posers in that crappy little band, Greta Van Wannabe. I despise the kid on the vocals. He's easily a top10 all-time most disliked vocalist for me, which says a lot considering their limited catalog. Anyway, the rise of those guys has made me dislike Plant that much more.

As for BS and DP, stuff that DP and BS put out in the 70's and enjoy it as much now as I did 10, 20, 30 and 40 yrs ago. The music is still rock solid, the vocals have aged just fine (for my musical ears).

I recently heard Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. I remember it as being a really hot song, but it sounds so dated and strange to me now.
