Child of Novelty is cool as hell!!

Picked this one up a couple days ago, Wolf's exuberance about it intrigued me, I'll get to it this week sometime.

STRANGE UNIVERSE

Number three in Frank and friends discography is the mighty Strange Universe. And while it is not quite
as heavy as Child of the Novelty it still retains some of the heavy proto metal feel to it while also harkening
back to the debut a bit as well. Relaying on Franks wild and highly skilled guitar antics this one is the last of
the discography that is also highly psychedelically influenced. It is a favorite of my 70's vinyl collection and one
I think others here may enjoy as well. The sonic vibe has a bit of a progressive jazz feel to the the guitar tone at times which make it very interesting to me. The album deserves much more credit and praise then it ever received. Once again Frank was hounded by the critics as a "Hendrix imitator" and while these early works are indeed very similar to Jimi's work they also show a good deal of Franks individuality IMO. Frank Marino was all of 19 years old when these complexed tracks were laid down.

I first heard Frank Marino when Tommy Vance played Juggernaut and Strange Dream, from the Juggernaut album, on his BBC Radio One Friday Rock Show in 1982. I loved both tracks and was not disappointed when I later bought the album. I first heard Mahogany Rush when Alan Freeman played Dragonfly, from the 1977 Live album, on his Capital Radio show in the nineteen-eighties. Again, I thought the track was great and later bought the album. Since then, I've been collecting Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush albums in a rather haphazard fashion. Juggernaut is a subtle album, full of little nuancies, perhaps in keeping with the early eighties, while on other albums, Marino's guitar playing sounds like something from another planet. At times, though, his voice sounds a bit strained and his playing can be a little repetitive. Overall, I love this band and they always make me sit up and listen. I read in a recent interview that Marino now regrets the story that he believed himself to be the reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix.

Been listening to 'IV' LP yesterday, it is excellent. But the track 'IV... the Emperor' is just full of epicness. I have never heard anything like it before and that even makes it even better. Absolute corker.

Thanks for starting a thread on this great band. I've seen them a number of times since the '70s. I've gotten the band's autograph a couple of times, too (What's Next and From the Hip).

I visit AMG for reference and to read up on album reviews. I was extremely disappointed to read what passed for an album review on the Mahogany Rush IV lp. I thought it was a very innovative releases for a rock band at that time. Their reviewer just brushed it off as one would an insignificant piece of junk. I wonder if that reviewer even listened to it.

I saw them play a club here for the From the Hip tour. I was no more than 20 feet from the band while they were playing. I kept thinking of how, just a few years before, I was watching this band from the second level of our local convention center!! They band even came out after their set and signed autographs and hung out with audience members that were hanging around. Truly, one of the greats in the history of rock...and a total class act (which I can't say about the AMG reviewer).

Condolences to Frank and his family.
