Hey I'm going to be debating the best deep purple album on an upcoming show I'm working on for a YouTube channel.

I will be debating someone who is picking "Perfect Strangers" as Deep Purples best album, I think its probably "Machine Head" myself but I get to compare PS to every other DP album to argue my point.

Just wondering what people's thoughts are and which albums you think are Purples best albums and why. I'd like to get some opinions so I can better prepare my arguments for next week it would be a great help.
Thanks.

Not to dismiss Perfect Stranger's strengths, but if you get to pick from the mk II outings....then you've won!!!
Machine Head is the most iconic, due mostly on the single SOTW. But a very strong album!
In Rock: Probably their hardest rocking release...just kicks ass right out the gate and never lets up!
Fireball: Probably their most melodic? A dash of prog flavor to it. Currently my personal fav.
Who Do We Think We Are: A very strong album who's biggest weakness is being compared to those I mentioned above, but IMO, much stronger than PS.
Good luck!!!

Awesome thank you, In Rock and Fireball are probably right beside Machine Head for me, some good points thanks again.
The idea for the debate is that someone picks a dark horse album as a bands best album and then the other person gets to debate from the side of popular opinion and use the rest of the albums catalog. Kind of the point is to knock them down like "Hey are you crazy?" So it will be fun for sure.

Interesting, although if I was him i would have at least chosen Come Taste The Band....so that I would at least have a chance.
.
Maybe post a link to it when done?

Ya of course, we're filming on the 25th it should be up the next week if assume.
And part of it is that you kind of believe your choice, so if my favourite Sabbath album was Paranoid, it wouldn't work, but if my favourite Sabbath album was something like Seventh Star, then we would consider that for an episode.

Hers a link to the channel we've done a few already with bands like Rainbow and Thin Lizzy:

Thanks again for the feedback.

What do you think about the Coverdale stuff? Do you think Burn or Stormbringer are in contention for best purple album?

Listen, I know the people, who says, that "Burn" is their best LP. Another person disagree, and trying to prove, that it's "Machine Head". Besides, I know many people, who will tell to you: it's "The Battle Rages On". Or ""Purpendicular". Or "Stormbringer". Or "Come Taste The Band". Or "Slaves and Masters" (believe me, I'm not joking. Btw, "Slaves and Masters" - is one of their best in Blackmore's opinion).
So, I think, that Deep Purple - is one of the best bands in history, and their legacy is extraordinarely multifacetedly (unlike Cannibal Corpse or Deicide, ha-ha!). That's the reason, why different people will choose different albums as the best.

P.S. My personal opinion: I just can't choose between "In Rock" and "Machine Head".

I like those albums a lot, but IMO they are not in the same league of the mk II releases.

With my hand on heart I cannot pick the 'best album' because a lot of fine songs such as eg 'Burn' are interspersed among albums. Of course albums like 'Machine Head' made their mark but very good songs followed on eg 'Solitaire' (not so acknowledged very underrated song) For me the best album which shows Deep Purple at their most natural best and showing their inherent style and nature is 'Made in Japan'. Its ironic because the band at first did not want to record a 'live album', it was simply not done at the the time, but proved a great success in hind sight (even though some studio editing was done).

Machine Head crushes every other album, it's not even close for me.

My next favorite would probably be Perfect Strangers. I saw them on that tour and that will always help hold that album nearer and dearer to my heart than many of their others. Not saying PS is their second best album, just that I like it second best (if that makes any sense).
