Rush were never hard rock or progressive rock. They belong to a special genre called geek rock. Also included in that category are Weezer and the Barenaked Ladies. Look it up.

Makes me think of a recent quote by Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders: "Almost ALL guys in rock bands are pussy's"...

My band back in the late 70s played tons of Rush. Saw them in a small theater back east on the Farewell to Kings tour. A few arena shows since. I break them into 4 periods.

Early stuff prior to commercial success - Caress of Steel being my fave.
Late 70s early 80s mass success - Permanent Waves.
The keyboard years - Power Windows.
Back to basics - Clockwork Angels.

The first Rush album I bought was Signals. FM radio was playing “Countdown”, “New World Man”, and “Digital Man”. I was enthralled with the space shuttle program so “Countdown” was instantly so great.
Then I started building my library buying new releases when they came out and a few of their previous albums from used record stores or new.
I’ve only seen them perform live twice, however.
Someone recently lamented, “I feel sorry for the people who only know, “Tom Sawyer”.
