Re: Mountain

Felix Pappalardi who produced Cream and Mountain and played bass on the second and third Mountain albums was murdered by his wife.
Well that wasn't very nice of her. :(

Having never owned any of their albums, I only knew of "Mississippi Queen" that was always on the radio, but when I bought their 'Best Of' album I discovered a couple of terrific tunes in "Nantucket Sleighride" and "Boys in the Band". Their sound is reminiscent of bands like Grand Funk, Three Dog Night and Guess Who.

Re: Mountain

I just scanned Mystic Fire quickly and its pretty cool, I like what I heard, I like Nantucket Sleighride and maybe another album, not my favorite band in the world, but I'll listen to them, I'm sure they'd be a fun live band like everyone else said

Re: Mountain

Ok, I'll try to give some much deserved time and attention to this thread! :)

Mountain was, and still continues to be an extremely unique, diverse and fantastic band, imo! I've been listening to all of their superb music for many years and thoroughly enjoy the music, the band, and each artists' contributions, too! Many songs remain special favorites even after more than 30 years and continuing.

I have worn out a few copies of "Best of" over they years. Although Mountain may best be known for the (radio overplayed) hit of 'Mississippi Queen' which remains a favorite of mine, despite the continuous radio airplay! :heheh:

Both Felix Pappalardi and Leslie West are extremely talented, imo! Both with their songwriting, their abilities and guitar playing! One of the features that I have always enjoyed, and do continue to, is the contrasting singing styles of songs that Felix would sing on and those that Leslie West did. There is a noticeable difference between the two, and does make for a further unique styling of songs that have complimentary qualities.

One of my favorite Mountain songs:

and the extended live version:

Corky Laing is an excellent, solid and versatile drummer, too! His drumming styles both vary in tempos, and also are very strong, more so with the very recognizable cowbell featured on 'Mississippi Queen'.

Mountain also had line-up changes with additions of an excellent keyboard player and another guitarist for live recordings. There are many great songs, live releases and cover art all on the earlier works of this fantastic band.

There were also bad times, too. As with many bands over many years, significant, and drastic happenings do occur with long time rock bands and some of the members!

I have many fond memories of this band, numerous songs, and also Leslie Wests' solo releases, as well.

A terrific fairly recent release, that I enjoy quite a lot as well, Magic!

I believe there was another title for this, perhaps the European release, that is called 'High'.

Re: Mountain

One of the funniest stories I have ever heard came from Lemmy Kilmister's autobiography called White Line Fever. He states that once while at some boring, stuffy social event, he, West and his guitarist Wurzel snuck off to get some air and wound up in a bathroom for a little nose candy dabbling. They all covertly crowded into a toilet stall and proceeded to try and finagle the coke so that they could each snort a bit. I forget who actually had it, but there in the cramped quarters of the john stall, somebody bumped somebody and there went the little brown vial of coke down into the cramped bathroom abyss. This being midst them all standing in such a confined space and all. Wurzel, being the slightest of them, quickly took advantage of the situation as he dexterously dropped straight down and proceeded to snort all the coke he could off the grand guitar wielding master Leslie West's boot where a good portion of it had fallen. Such is the stuff legends are made of I suppose.

I never was a huge Mountain fan, but I really like Nantucket Sleighride.
