The New Musical Express Book of Rock (my issue is from 1975, but it was first published in 1973) has Heavy Metal as an entry and refers to the heavy bands. Their examples were what you would expect from up to and including the early to mid-seventies, but from long before NWOBHM. The latter term was often misunderstood and mis-applied anyway, to numerous earlier groups, presumably by people too young to remember them. Some of them were not even British!

Just because Ozzy and Iommi may not have liked the term doesn't make their music any less than what we hear it as. Heavy metal.

I would give them some credit. After all, there are those who, paradoxically, credit them with creating the genre. Likewise, John Paul Jones has said that Led Zeppelin were not heavy metal. I am not even a fan, but would credit him with having the knowledge and experience.

No, I don't think of the Zep as a heavy metal band. I kind of use this generic term of hard rock/heavy rock, which I'd plonk some of their stuff in, but they were also heavily blues and folk influenced, so I think it's easier to say Zep weren't heavy metal. But the vast majority of Sabbath's catalogue fits the category imo.

Don't ask me what happened with the bleedin font size. sorry!

Still disagree with them on Sabbath at least. I do consider them metal.

Eric Clapton once stated during a filmed interview wrongly that the CREAM were probably the worlds first heavy metal band without knowing it and when the CREAM wasn't around anymore LED ZEPPELIN was probably the first official heavy metal band.

Just goes to show you what Clapton knows?. He mite be GOD to some folks but he sure know f**k all about music!!!.

LED ZEPPELIN was a HEAVY ROCK BAND or even a HEAVY BLUES/ROCK BAND they sure weren't no f**king HEAVY METAL BAND Eric!!!.

SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is a HEAVY ROCK ALBUM.

BLACK SABBATH was originally a HEAVY ROCK BAND during the 1970-76/77 period but from about there NEVER SAY DIE album in 1978 they started to slowly become known in the UK as a HEAVY METAL band as HEAVY ROCK or HARD ROCK as it was known up until then had a resurgent's in popularity from around 1978 onwards in the UK and was called by a younger generation of heavy rock fan's HEAVY METAL which they the band were known as forever more.

I go back and forth on this one. Sabbath are considerd one of the founding fathers of metal but the brand was so badly soiled by hair metal and glam metal in the 80's that Sabbath is lessened by association.

I don't think no one can name a specific date at which the genre heavy metal became clearly distinguishable. There has been rumours and myths that have all but been disqualified.
