1986, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray joined other artists on stage in St Louis, for Chuck Berry's 60th birthday concert, as featured in the film 'Hail Hail! Rock & Roll'.

2015, Patti Smith was said to be moved to tears after a fan returned a bag of stolen goods to the singer, 36 years after they went missing. They included a shirt worn for a 1978 Rolling Stone cover shot and a bandana given to her by her late brother. The items went missing in June 1979 when a truck, which was carrying $40,000 in amplifiers, guitars and other musical equipment, was stolen from outside a hotel after Smith and her band played a show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.

1943 C.F. "Fred" Turner (bassist/vocalist for Bachman-Turner Overdrive) is born Charles Frederick Turner in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1947 Bob Weir (guitarist/vocalist for Grateful Dead) is born in San Francisco, California.

1953 Rocker Tony Carey (keyboardist for The Rainbow) is born in Watsonville, California. Also known by the pseudonym Planet P Project.

1962 Flea (bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers) is born Michael Peter Balzary in Melbourne, Australia. His nickname - originally "Mike B the Flea" - comes from his manic energy, as he is always jumping around.

1974 The Rolling Stones release It's Only Rock N' Roll.

1942 Gary Puckett (front man for Union Gap) is born in Hibbing, Minnesota, but would be raised in Yakima, Washington (not far from the city Union Gap).

1946 Mike Hossack (drummer for The Doobie Brothers) is born in Paterson, New Jersey.

1964 The Rolling Stones release 12X5.

1968 Reggae musician Ziggy Marley is born David Nesta Marley in Kingston, Jamaica.

1980 Bruce Springsteen releases The River.

2017 Gord Downie, leader of the Canadian band The Tragically Hip, dies at 53 after a battle with cancer.

1926, Born on this day, Chuck Berry singer, songwriter and guitarist. Berry was one of the pioneers of rock and roll music, who helped developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive; his lyrics focusing on teen life and consumerism plus his own brand of showmanship became a major influence on subsequent rock music. He also had surprise hit in 1972 with the UK and US No.1 single 'My Ding A Ling'. A major influence on The Beatles and Rolling Stones, Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode' was one of the examples of music from Earth sent out to space. Berry died on 18 March 2017 aged 90.

1968, 18 year old Peter Frampton meet Steve Marriott at a Small Faces show in London. After striking up a friendship, the two started planning a new group which emerged as Humble Pie next April.

1997, Original Alice Cooper band guitarist Glen Buxton died from pneumonia, aged 49. Born in Akron, Ohio, he attended High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he met Dennis Dunaway and Vincent Furnier, later to call himself the titular Alice Cooper. Buxton co-wrote several classic Alice Cooper hits, including 'School's Out', 'I'm Eighteen' and 'Elected.'

This Day In Rock History: October 20th

1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd members Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines are killed when their charter plane crashes. Also killed are Gaines sister Cassie, who was a back-up singer, and the group's manager Dean Kilpatrick. The tragedy effectively puts an end to one of the all-time great Southern Rock bands.

1997, Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind 97' was declared by the Guinness Book Of Records as the biggest selling single record of all time, with 31.8 million sales in less than 40 days and raising more than £20 million for charity.

2006, American musician, singer, songwriter, and drummer Sandy West died. Founding member (with Joan Jett) of all girl group The Runaways, hailed by fans and critics alike to be one of the most groundbreaking drummers in rock and roll history.
