No surprise here, I voted for Mr. Fingers (as Dave once called him) hisself, Eddie Van Halen.
Rhoads style was too one-dimentional for my liking. There are only three songs on Ozzy's first two albums that have any heart and soul, hooks, rhythm and melody: "You Can't Kill Rock & Roll, "Believer", and "Tonight". Everything else is just noise. And not the kind of noise I like.
Eddie, on the other hand, always had versatile riffs and tempo, and blazing, yet technical, solos. And on VH's albums with Dave, there was plenty of heart and soul, fills, hooks, rhythm and melody.
The biggest observation I can make between Eddie and Randy is Eddie could make his guitar sing. I can't say I ever heard Randy do that. And if he (Randy) did, I guess my ear didn't like what he was singing -- save for the three songs mentioned above.
But that's just me.
