yes and no, I can see both sides of this. well it is obvious rock has declined if you compare them to bands of the past, and this is mainly because as others have said, rock isn't in the foreground anymore. wich is sad. instead the mainstream is filled with modern pop and rap. two genres I find personally disgusting and could argue to the ground how bad they are, but rock technically isn't dead, its just not as good, and its taken some different routes, for example indie rock is very popular nowadays just, not on the charts. you have to dig very deep to find some quality rock music nowadays wich can be depressing having to dig through the crap that's taken the mainstream by storm but it is, technically still there. I would rather though just keep looking for rock hits of the past, instead of sifting through garbage to find the rock of today.

The optimist in me says no...rather that it's ripe for a revolution. This hasn't happened since Nirvana, but, prior to that, it hadn't happened since The Clash.

Independent labels and the coverage they receive from critics, as well as YouTube, etc. give audiences greater access to more bands than we've ever observed...we just need the right band and right sound to come along. At this point it's clear that this not a modern interpretation of folk by some British scenester wearing a waistcoat, playing the upright bass, and paying vague, insincere tribute to dust bowl-era America. But that mis-fire shouldn't deplete our hope or our faith in the resilience of rock and roll.

Rock is...

I don't think rock is dying at all or even close to it. I think the problem is too many people expect bands to be as good as those classic era bands. Rock has changed/evolved past that whether people like it or not.

That's a great way of putting what it is as @AboutAGirl. Agree with you on modern rock as well. It's still rock, but not the stuff that I grew up with and loved. There are very few modern rock bands that I can really identify with in the same way as with the 70's bands. Some of the musicians are technically better, but it lacks something for me. Perhaps it's the rawness and power of the early rock that is missing, especially with the recorded stuff.
Is rock dying? In much the same way that there were the swing and jazz and rock 'n roll era's in popular before us, rock is slowly being taken over by the next era, whatever it is. So maybe it is, who knows? Sure hope it's not.

Is Rock Dying A Slow Death?

My impulsive answer is yes.

However, when I sit and seriously think about it, the answer is no. Rock music is no longer the front runner of the music scene, though. Today is the pop era.

By ROCK I am referring to classic late 60's & 70's style rock. There are rock bands out there, plenty of blues rock, and plenty of new diverse rock bands. Just open your mind and ears.......

and do some googling ;)

sadly the statements you`ve all made is true, but the golden years had the same question when "PUNK ROCK" rear its ugly head the music papers all stated rock was DEAD!!!! the bands of `60/`70`s it was called " DINOSAUR ROCK" so this question well come and go over and over again.

Two fairly new bands that come to mind that have captured the old retro rock sound is Chickenfoot and Rival Sons.. I'm sure there are others who can reproduce the old style of rock. But you have to have your head in being a true musician who dosn't follow the drift of where music is going these day's. Too much help from electronic devices like autotune or programs that make it too easy to pump out tunes and less effort playing a instrument and knowing how to play it correctly..
Rock isn't dead but it's having a hard time selling records due to executive oversight who just want to get bands to produce money hits..

Or maybe some 50/60 year olds you consult are happy living in the past or just don't give newer bands a chance or just don't see the talented rock bands of today. I really get a bit fed up of this old chestnut. There is plenty going on in the USA, UK, Europe, Australia .. wherever.

I think you mean devolved.

Perhaps. In the sense that dinosaurs devolved into birds. Do I prefer dinosaurs? Of course I do, look how amazing they were. But birds are more efficient, more capable, and they're able to survive in a world that would be inhospitable to dinosaurs.

I agree. I admit that I do live in the past, but at the same time, there are plenty of really brilliant musicians, in really good bands, playing their hearts out at clubs, etc. that are just not getting a break from the powers that be. A lot of the new music I have bought in the last few years are of bands who have self-produced cd's or dvd's. There are not many off-the-shelf albums that I would consider buying at the moment.

I would say the last ten years or so has been better for rock than the ten before it, even if I don't like a lot of what is out there.

Theres rival sons, glorious sons, royal blood, black keys, etc etc that make new albums and are all over the radio, but I have trouble getting much out of it...but at least I give it all an honest try. Some stuff appealing to me (prob because I am getting really old now) has been from Canada oddly enough, such as Billy Talent, Sam Roberts, and the Trews.

More mumbling..imo rock is still going strong, better than a short while ago (but I just don't like a lot of it!)

I agree and that's a good point, my thoughts are the movers and shakers and indeed public attitudes have changed. A lot of the music, the bands and the musicians that are coming through in the underground scene are spot on. It's up to the masses to support them. As I've said before Rock music probably hit it's popularity zenith in the 70's but there is still plenty going on IMHO. :grinthumb
