David Gilmour will probably never stop hearing questions about the possibility of another Pink Floyd album or tour — and it seems equally certain that he’ll never change his mind about closing the book on that part of his past.

In a recent interview with Classic Rock magazine (via Billboard), Gilmour reiterated his insistence that Pink Floyd are truly finished, explaining, “I’m done with it. I’ve had 48 years in Pink Floyd — quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger [Waters]. And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95 percent musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter. And I certainly don’t want to let the other five percent color my view of what was a long and fantastic time together. But it has run its course, we are done — and it would be fakery to go back and do it again.”

This is hardly the first time in recent memory that Gilmour has dismissed the possibility of further Floyd, but for some fans, the release of last year’s The Endless River sparked hopes of an eventual follow-up project of some sort. As Gilmour pointed out to Classic Rock, the River tracks were based on performances recorded when keyboardist Rick Wright, who died in 2008, was still alive, and Wright’s absence means the band couldn’t continue even if he wanted it to.

“To do it without Rick would just be wrong,” he noted, adding, “I absolutely don’t want to go back. I don’t want to go and play stadiums … under the [Pink Floyd] banner. I’m free to do exactly what I want to do and how I want to do it. Obviously I accept there are people who want to go and see and hear this legend that was Pink Floyd, but I’m afraid that’s not my responsibility.”

Gilmour’s current responsibilities include overseeing — and touring behind — his next solo album, Rattle That Lock. His former Floyd partner Waters, who has his own new record in the pipeline, has also put the band firmly behind him — although fans can take solace in the possibility that there might be more unreleased material in the band’s vaults.

I was really saddened to hear this, honestly. I mean, people say stuff like, "Well, it's not so bad cause we knew it was coming." I don't know what people are talking about. Maybe everybody else read a couple articles I didn't. I don't know. All I do know is that no matter what, this is one of the greatest bands in rock history. Actually, in music. This is one of the greatest bands in the history of music. I am heartbroken at Gilmour's and the other band members decisions to break up. Especially the way David did it. He acts like he wants to act like it never happened. Same with Page. He acts like Led Zeppelin was the biggest mistake of his career. Well, if it wasn't for Zeppelin, Page wouldn't have been known as one of the greatest guitarists ever. It's the same thing with Gilmour. I don't understand why you want to hide the best thing that ever happened to your career.

Same with Page. He acts like Led Zeppelin was the biggest mistake of his career.
Have to pick you up on that, I think Plant sometimes give that impression, but he just likes to move on, rather than dwell on the past. He's very proud of what he did with Zep, but doesn't want to spend his whole life singing songs from his past. I totally respect that. This is talked about at length in the recent biography.
Page, on the other hand, is the opposite. This is at least the 2nd time he has reissued the LZ catalogue, and I am glad he has done this time, he's done a terrific job, but it would be good if he would put out something new, he's been talking about it for years.

As for Floyd, their last "proper" album was 21 years ago, since then, there was the brief Live 8 reunion and the odd cameo at each other's shows after an apparent improvement in relations between Waters and Gilmour.
The Endless River was an album made of stuff that wasnt deemed good enough to make it onto Division Bell, and to many, including myself, was dull and pointless.
While I do not question Floyd's greatness, they have been a spent force for 20 years, sorry.

Well, gee, Dave. You can't blame people for thinking there's a possibility when you randomly put out a new Pink Floyd album less than a year ago! Still think they should not have done it that way. Could have easily been done as a reissue.

Live8 was the end of the band, to me.

To be fair, they are all seventy years of age and one of them isn't even with us any more. I'm not sure I'd want to be doing a heavy touring schedule at that stage of my life.
