I totally agree, Dangerous Toys are sadly underrated! I'm not huge on Tora Tora, although I dig a couple tunes. Junkyard is pretty high on my list too!

I started with the big names (Motley, GNR, Poison, Ratt...) and eventually branched out from there. Honestly, if it wasn't for VH1 Classics and back issues of Metal Edge, my music collection would be rather barren!

This is a thread after my own heart - however I despise the term "hair metal" as it's a nonsensical phrase that along with "glam metal" means nothing and is contradictory (though both are very popular across the pond).

Growing up in the 80s I was spoilt: rock was mainstream, all the legends were in their prime (AC/DC, Jovi, Priest, Maiden, Ozzy, Aerosmith, Poison etc) and there were so many bands that many fell through the cracks (or were purposefully ignored as I had such a good choice already). These last few years though, with the help of the internet and You Tube suggestions, I have dedicated myself to discovering all the bands I missed out on. It's given me a real shot in the arm, not only because I wish it was still in the 80s but because I get to discover new music despite it being 20+ years old.

The sad thing is, for me, is that the tail-end of the genre: 89-93 produced the best work. For most of the 80s, bands were either heavy and not-so-melodic or lightweight and catchy as hell but with albums like Skid Row, bands were merging the two and building on the huge production values of Whitesnake's 1987 - generating albums of cranked guitars, booming drums and choruses that sound like they're chanted by 1000 people.

Anyway, enough of the waffle, here are some killer bands I've found on top of the great names mentioned already We'll start with my fave discovery Baton Rouge. Also special mention to Dare for creating a masterpiece album (Blood From Stone) without a single weak track:

BATON ROUGE

DARE

WILDSIDE

KATMANDU

TYKETTO

SAINTS AND SINNERS

SIGNAL

EVENRUDE

NO SWEAT

LIONSHEART

FM

BLUE TEARS

LEE AARON

WITHOUT LOVE

CHRISSY STEELE

And here's some phenomenal 80s sounding bands from the 2000s - replete with the big production and tunes so catchy they're worthy of ABBA:

STRANDED

ALL I KNOW

DREAMHUNTER

PRIDE

Why is so stupid dressing up, like if you were in the 80's?
I mean I feel myself great, but feel unconfortable going out to the streets among "normal" people.
Normal here means well... you know what is normal these days.
Will I be stared in Los Angeles too? No, not thuesday at 10:00PM but like saturday night.
Are there any clubs / pubs to go?

I like that Vandenberg was mentioned in this thread, but I'm kinda bummed he is thought of as obscure. He really should have been bigger, and I don't know why he wasn't. A remark I once read on one of the Van Halen websites is that Eddie would have just been another Adrian Vandenberg without David Lee Roth. Kinda makes you wonder what Adrian Vandenberg would have become WITH a David Lee Roth.

I also agree about the Cinderella name. The name certainly didn't draw me in as a fan -- even though I like a few of their songs. But then again I don't like enough of their songs for them to even be a guilty pleasure, so maybe their name doesn't really matter.

Ok, now to adding to this thread. Two bands I haven't seen listed is Hanoi Rocks and Saigon Kick.

I know nothing about Hanoi Rocks other than about the car crash that killed their drummer. I do know a lot of people like them, but I'm not sure why. I don't think they were ever played on the radio or MTV. Maybe they're just famous for almost being famous. Sorta like Mother Love Bone (except their album was pretty damn good).

Ok, moving on to Saigon Kick. They are another band I know very little about EXCEPT... their second album, The Lizard, is a damn good album. "Hostile Youth" and the ballad "Love Is On The Way" were their two smash hits on the rock radio station out here in Southern California, and I think the videos were in rotation on MTV in the early 90's.

Two more bitchin songs from two obscure, underrated and/or under-appreciated bands from the 80's:

Y&T "Summertime Girls" (damn you, 80's half-shirts!)

TNT "10,100 Lovers (In One)"
