Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton of Cream have led tributes to bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce, who died yesterday at the age of 71.
The news was confirmed by his family and publicist following days of online rumours started by a hoax. He’d been suffering from liver disease.
Despite their difficult and often violent relationship, drummer Baker said last night: “A very sad day. Goodbye my friend.” Clapton added: “He was a great musician and composer, and a tremendous inspiration to me.”
Among the others paying their respects were members of Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Rush, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beatles, Queen, Asia and many others.
TeamRock Radio will play Cream’s 1968 album Wheels Of Fire in full at 4pm GMT today as a memorial.

Then I saw him live during his solo career. I never knew him or spoke to him, but he has been a part of my psyche since day one of my career. As with all of us music lovers, I think something of me has departed along with his passing.

Cream with Jack gave me my ongoing love of the three-piece band format, before I had ever heard of Jimi Hendrix. Jack inspired me through all his changes. The last time I saw him was at a jazz festival in surrey, where he once again blew me away with his playing, singing, and total channelling of the music and the moment. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. What a loss for us all.

Well, at least he has grown much older than Rory Gallagher - who died under similar circumstances (liver complications) at the age of 47.
I remember an interview with Jack Bruce (in the Melody Maker or Mojo Magazine?) about 15 years ago:
Therein he spoke frankly about his long-time use of really hard drugs: daily shots of Heroin plus five bottles of Whisky every week over more than two decades, from the early seventies to the mid-nineties. After several withdrawal treatments he gave up the Heroin, sticking strictly to Alcohol only.
Bruce referred in this interview also to other presumed junkies in the Rock biz: calling for example Keith Richards a soft boy who quit with Heroin already after barely ten years, consuming stingily only three bottles of Whisky one week....
