Objective opinions? I'm would base this on vocals since that's what a pop artist brings and don't read this as a cover versus original poll. It's not! :heheh: Just chime in what side of the coin the cover comes up on! :grinthumb

Isn't "Babe I'm going to leave you" an old folk song rather than a "Led Zeppelin song"?

(Her version is clearly based on Jimmy Page's arrangement though, so I guess I just wanted to point that out needlessly.)

You are right Luderei. It wasn't needless and you are right. I used the term Zeppelin cover because that seemed to be closer to the original aim. :)

None of the 3 options really quite fits for me. I think that she did a good job, but I'm not surprised by it. Miley was and still is a good singer (when she wants to be), she just happens to catch mainstream limelight as a goofball both with her on-stage antics as well as her drastic change in appearance and some of the really off-the-wall comments she happens to make. But, yeah, she CAN sing.

To me, I don't think it could possibly be called sacrilege because she stayed very true to the Zeppelin version of the song. Had she gone off on some weird pop-oriented banter in the song, then yeah, I'd go that route, but she didn't. She stayed VERY true to the Zeppelin recording.

I agree Lynch! I posted it because even though I'm not a Miley fan I've seen her play it straight and do some really good singing like when she covered "Jolene. I posted here because I was pleasantly surprised as I never heard her attempt to belt out a rock vocal and the Spin article I saw had all these criticisms where people were yelling sacrilege without even listening to it. If it was anonymous I'm sure they would've at least given props for someone doing a solid cover and would've said at least she's better than Miley Cyrus! :heheh:

If I had heard this on the radio and had no idea who was singing I would think "that's a good cover". I'm no Miley fan, but that's not bad at all.

Absolutely awful. Beyond crap. And it's not just because it's from a completely tasteless Hollywood schill. The phrasing at the beginning isn't too bad but I hate the processed guitar sound on anything even Michael Hedges stuff and perhaps worse is the fact that when she tries to be dynamic she goes inaudible here and there. In some tunes that isn't all that bad but it sounds contrived the way she does it.

That said, I stuck with it thinking I was going to say 'meh' or possibly even 'not bad' if she managed to sound melodic through the whole thing but then the 'heavy' part kicked in.

Are you kidding me? Is there anyone who wasn't physically repulsed by the dying squirrel sounds she was getting? It sounded like cat fight in downtown Baltimore and not even in the good way. I didn't know how she was going to exceed the tastelessness of that diaper gyration routine she did a while back but this was a good try.

Surprising solely for the fact that she chose this particular song. Miley does lots of these kinds of covers: Beatles, Nirvana, Dylan, Runaways. But this isn't the song I'd have expected her to do by Zepp, that's for sure.

I'm not the biggest fan of Miley's music but I accompanied some friends to a Miley concert earlier this summer. I was very, very deeply impressed by the undeniable sincerity she treated her fans to. Even not being a fan, I found her concert extremely uplifting and I think she is a very good influence on her devotees. In fact, I kind of wish she had been around when I was growing up, I could have used the kind of kick in the butt she provides. A lot of pop artists preach self-assurance but Miley's the only one that really seems to follow through with it.

As far as Miley's arrangement goes, it's not bad. The singing is good but the instrumentation is extremely sparse, sounds like they might have recorded it in her bedroom or something. It's impossible to match Robert's '68 vocals but at least Miley probably sings it better than Robert could in 2014.
