Ray-Davies-Dave-Davies-Kinks.jpg

The Kinks haven’t released an album of new material since ‘Phobia’ in 1993, but if fans were expecting all that time off to smooth the famously fractious relationship between co-founding brothers Dave and Ray Davies, they can think again.

The band recently confirmed plans for a 50th anniversary reunion that will include new music, and during an interview with Mojo, Ray reiterated that the project is still going forward. It may not, however, include guitarist Dave.

“Dave’s invited to the party, but if he doesn’t want to do it, [the reunion] will happen anyway,” he predicted. “He’s very welcome to turn up if he wants. I’d much rather work with him than without him.”

In the meantime, Ray is recording new songs with Kinks drummer Mick Avory, and he shrugged off a question as to whether a Kinks project without both Davies brothers actually counts as the Kinks. “Yes, it would. I think it’s all down to the music,” he argued. “If somebody can’t or won’t play, there are other players out there. Mick and I want to do it.”

Here’s hoping Dave’s recent recalcitrance is a passing phase. Earlier this year, he sounded a far more encouraging note in an interview with Uncut, musing, “I said to Ray I thought that it’d be a great shame if we don’t try and do something. I don’t think our love has diminished. I think the stage play has played itself out a bit, the pretense and the acting. I think it’s time reality took over, and started directing the last years of … whatever it is. It’s like Cain and Abel.”

I see what you are getting at, but I think you are wrong.

Thin Lizzy without Lynott is just a TL cover band - Lynott was the face, voice, everything in Lizzy.
CCR without Fogerty was actually Creedence Clearwater Revisited - John was also the face, frontman, and most recognizable part of CCR

Pink Floyd without Waters is still very much Pink Floyd and for one reason, Waters was not the sole voice in Floyd. Had he been, then yes, it would have been goofy. To some fans, Water-less Floyd isn't really Pink Floyd. I personally feel that Gilmore leaving would have been a much bigger factor due to his signature guitar playing and sound. But.. I digress...

So... I get what you were trying for here.

My point is it doesn't matter how integral the member is, as long as the name is still there people will pay big bucks to see anyone under the moniker of any classic rock band name. Kudos to those who will not pay big bucks when one of the integral members is not there.

if the beach boys factions could reunite for their 50th, i feel sure dave will come round. i'd certainly go. saw ray twice, once in a small club, and had i not been tricked out of my ticket stub, i'd have gotten an autograph. i basically stood right in front of the man!

Ray - get a grip, you're getting carried away with yourself. No way is it The Kinks without Dave.

I could have predicted this the moment a Kinks reunion tour was in the works, the animosity between Ray and Dave is beyond my understanding. Ray takes a great delight in humiliating his brother for some reason. I like some of the Kinks music but I have never liked Ray Davies as a person, he comes across as a real 'git' to me.

Well they better hurry up..........the classic stars are dropping like flies.

That apply to GITS as well.
