I love The Black Album. Some people say Metallica was trying to appeal to the grunge crowd but Black came out before Smells Like Teen Spirit was even released, well before grunge became popular. If Metallica was trying to appeal to an underground grunge audience in '91 that makes them even cooler in my book.

I'm not that fond of Load & Reload. People always seem to say they're blues-rock albums but they don't sound like any blues I've heard in my life. Straight ahead hard rock, 100%, pure and simple. If you want a really heavy blues album that verges on metal you have to go to someone like Lance Lopez or even Aersomith's Honkin' on Bobo, there's no blues at all in Load & Reload. It just sounds kind of bluesy to people because metal is very angular and rock is loose, and Metallica hadn't played straight up rock before.

That's a bit of a strange opinion, but of course you are entitled to it. I always felt that Audioslave was like a slightly watered-down Soundgarden. Audioslave always came off to me as more straight-ahead rock than grunge. Whereas, Soundgarden took the best elements of Black Sabbath and made it into their own version of fiery, sometimes high speed grunge (Rusted Cage, Jesus Christ Pose etc.).

I agree with your description of them completely. That just wasn't a niche I had open in my catalog, is all. And I agree Audioslave is straight ahead rock but I didn't start listening to them until years later. And I like Rage Against the Machine so that influence on their instrumentation is one of the big things I enjoy about them.

Load and Reload have blues tendencies in them. Its not the typical blues you hear but the albums have lots of blues tendencies on there.

I agree on Audioslave, love that band.

I thought of another one. I can't stand Oasis. I heard so much good stuff about them at the time and people told me if I liked the Beatles, I would love Oasis. Not so. I picked up a couple CD's from them (Definitely Maybe and Whats The Story Morning Glory) and hated both of them. I listened to those two CD's at least 20 times a piece and I just could not get into them. I ended up trading them to a friend for a BJ Thomas Greatest Hits CD and I made out for the better.

Agree. Oasis are the most overrated band ever.

Super Collider is a good album. What's so wrong with Megadeth slowing it down at bit. It's still got some good tunes on it. Not as good as Youthanasia though.

Risk... um, Crush Em is cool. Give them that.

The birthplace of heavy metal (AKA Birmingham) / L
Here's some. I've not been on here enough to know if they're unpopular however:

- Roundabout by Yes is one of the greatest songs ever written, and deserves to be in the same sort of bracket Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California fall into.
- The Eagles never got better than their first three albums (Eagles, Desperado and On the Border).
- Hotel California is not as good as the songs New Kid in Town and The Last Resort from that album.
- The Jam are one of the most underrated British bands ever.
- Billy Gibbons is one of the greatest guitarists of the past half century.

I think 'The Long Run' is the best album by the Eagles by a long shot.

John Lennon had the worst solo output of all the Beatles.

...

For the life of me, I don't know how AC/DC made it in the music business. I've seen garage bands with more to say through their music.

That first opinion should be punishable by execution ;) Seriously though I never cared for it at all but I would say I like probably seven of the ten songs on it now. For me it was just too far removed from their roots (see my list above) and it was obvious that all of them bar Timothy B. Schmit were burnt out big time on coke and Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Don Felder all hated each other. I mean listen to this, this is absolutely horrific and by a country mile the worst song they ever wrote. It's meant to be a piss-take on disco music but it fails horrendously:

Will also agree on John Lennon. This is entering really unpopular territory now: Imagine is trite, hyperbolic and absolute gibbering fantasy. George Harrison I think was probably the most musically talented of them all. It's wonderful listening to him with Lynn, Petty etc in the Travelling Wilburys.

I can see why AC/DC are popular but I still don't care much for them. One of very few rock bands who do absolutely nothing for me at all.

The problem with Oasis for me is that they became the poster boys of the whole Manc set-up from the 1980s and 1990s: it does a disservice to better bands like The Smiths and Joy Division and that's what grates me about them (though obviously people themselves are to blame and not the constituent members).
