I don't think fans of Five Finger Death Punch, Alter Bridge, Godsmack, Stone Sour, Coheed and Cambria, The Black Keys, Shinedown, etc. would agree that they didn't have huge rock bands that have them eating out of the palm of their hand. Those aren't even my personal list. I'll put Blue October, Anberlin, The Used, Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, 30 Seconds to Mars etc. up against any rock band personally. The thing is if you used to like an older brand of rock nothing will change your mind unless that brand is cloned ad nauseam. Hell, I've been to a Third Eye Blind concert where the crowd was insane. There's no point in ever debating though because the music model has changed where you can have a rabid fanbase but the concerts have changed with the disparity of music. Festivals are a thing now as people listen to more of a variety of bands without grouping together to make some huge band. I prefer it that way even though I like individual concerts. I'd rather see my favorite band in a smaller setting anyway.

Me too. Don't get me wrong, I love checking out new bands, I'd just like to see more bands being able to tour their own product not just being part of a massive package.

The bands you listed probably put on a great show and have rabid fans, but to the best of my knowledge they don't have any one member that transcends the band itself and becomes a well known personal outside of the general fan base.

The average person may not like the Rolling Stones, but they'd know who Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are.

Oh, I get you there! I've always been guilty of not exploring the individuals outside of my top 5 bands and just buying and listening. I respect the output of all the musicians but like most buy into the front man being the driving force subconsciously and usually only get their name. Too many people today don't want to put their money on albums and that's a huge issue. If units aren't shifted then record companies won't invest their money. I don't think that's an evil record company thing. I think art and business go hand in hand and the people who shift the difference are supposed to be fans. If we aren't putting our cash into our favorite bands or looking for new favorites then units won't shift, a band won't find an identity, won't get to grow album by album and won't get the financial stability to headline/co-headline big shows. I blame the internet age for bring a sense of "I don't owe anything" and a jaded cynical attitude that is crushing music.

MY GOD!!! I think I just found my soul mate!! LOL My thoughts exactly. I hate this 'evil record company' attitude. How did all the rock stars get rich if all the record companies were screwing them?

This is a fantastic doco. Really show an insight into the industry and how it's changed.

This is just as good. Makes me cringe when I see how auto tune works.
Also, Bonnie Raitt says record company's used to have their 'guaranteed sellers - the money in the band - which allowed them to take a chance on some unknown bands.

(edit - mmm, video not coming up so here's the full link-- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPZztrRWjZ8&list=PLB1475A2BCB0D2551

It's a business like any other. Without money going in, they're not going to take a chance. They'll just go with the safe manufactured reality show crap that's aimed at pre teens, who 'have' to have it, or they'll be socially outed.

Awesome! We'll have to meet halfway though as I actually don't mind autotune. Keep in mind I don't want it to become the norm but if someone has an idea or writes songs I'd rather them use autotune so they can be behind the music rather than somebody coming in because they have a better voice. I know you don't like him but it allowed Kanye to make a R&B/Soul album with some heavier subject matter and emotions. I love it and it's one of my favorite post 2,000 albums. The point for me is that it allowed an artist who normally makes a different genre of music to expand and actually make the album they wanted to at the time. I was actually more put off by the autotune blurbs done by the group Fun. because I knew their vocalist doesn't need it at all and is a great singer. I still like the group and I guess they wanted it for effect. How I see autotune is how I see art. Artist will use whatever tool they can to creat an image and that's how open I think music should be . I do agree that the mentality of trying to just make music easy by mixing samples is not an exciting way to go. Most accomplished musicians today have much more in mind with the tools they use BUT the youth may not get that idea and think differently about how they approach music. I for one am pretty optimistic about the future though! :grinthumb

See I'd rather a musician be always pushing their own natural ability and if that means they're slightly off key and make a mistake so be it. Twist and Shout by The Beatles is a classic example. How shot is Lennon's voice? WOW! But it works so well and be put everything he had into it. Not list Princess Beiber who cancels a shot cause he has the sniffles.

And I'm there with you too man. My favorite band ever is The Smashing Pumpkins and I don't know how many people think a "better" vocalist would've improved the band. :wtf: Do they think that would've had the same impact with a David Coverdale? Not a chance! I don't think Lennon is a good vocalist either but I did enjoy his material. I guess for me, it just takes all kinds and all sorts of approaches. I don't over analyze the approach. I look at the result and try to hear a voice in the music I can feel and relate to. :grinthumb

As for Bieber, his equivalent in that regard would be Axl Rose. :heheh:

Ouch, now you're pushing some buttons. GNR are my favorite band. I have a lot of respect for Axl. I've collected countless bootleg videos, magazines, bios etc. I don't know the guy, but I understand a lot of his behavior.

interesting point, before the UYI tour, no show was stopped due to something being thrown at the stage. Axl started trying to maintain some control after two fans were killed at Dongington.
