The Stooges man features on Amnesty International posters.

In a new awareness campaign by Amnesty International Belgium, Iggy Pop is pictured looking beaten and bloody, with the implication being that he has been tortured into liking "popstar" Justin Bieber.

The image features the quote "L'avenir du rock 'n' roll, c'est Justin Bieber", which translates to "The future of rock 'n' roll, it's Justin Bieber".

The poster also features the anti-torture campaign's key message “Torture a man and he will tell you anything.”

Amnesty International's Belgium director Philippe Hensmans said of the campaign: “For us it was a quirky but not sloppy way to attract public attention to this tragic reality, which often happens in the greatest secrecy.”

I hope it works because it seems a bit too quirky to be taken seriously. :uh:

What an infantile and tasteless attempt to get your message across.

Epic fail on the part of Amnesty, Belgium.

I thought they of all people would know that torture and political oppression is something incredibly serious, and which kills hundreds of innocent people every year, and it isn’t a joke and something that you can reduce to having a convenient and pathetic dig at some (ultimately harmless) teen pop star, no matter how irritating he may be to most of us. Anyone who says, even jokingly, that listening to Bieber puts you on anywhere near the same level as somebody being genuinely tortured in prison, probably after some meaningless show-trial, and half starved, and with your life hanging by a thread, is a moron, and actually a far bigger ass than Justin Bieber is, or ever will be. In fact Iggy Pop is also a moron for allowing himself to be used for such a cheap-shot publicity stunt. If I was Bieber I may even sue Amnesty, OK JB is (IMO) a pretty marginal character, but that isn't the point ....directly associating any artist/performer's work with the consequences of torture is probably libelous, and almost certainly commercially harmful.

I couldn't agree more.

I think that's the message they are trying get across(albeit with a quirky sense of humor). Also, Bieber's an asswhole who treats people like shit so who gives **** if he's offended.

Amnesty International has apologised for creating a poster in which Iggy Pop was quoted describing Justin Bieber as the future of rock 'n' roll.

A mocked-up image of The Stooges frontman with a bruised and bloodied face was used on posters for Amnesty's anti-torture campaign, which comes with the message “Torture a man and he will tell you everything.”

The Dalai Lama also featured in the eye-catching adverts released by the charity's Belgian office. The message on Iggy's poster read, in French, “The future of rock 'n' roll is Justin Bieber.”

But Amnesty has since said sorry for putting words in Iggy's mouth. In a statement, the organisation says: "The overall goal of this campaign is to try to influence people's ideas on the use of torture. According to surveys, a shocking number of people believe that 'torture may sometimes be useful' – more than 36% of people even think that torture is justified in some cases.

"This is unacceptable, and we illustrate this reality with the message that a man who is tortured will say anything in order to escape this awfulness, using provocative images and statements to attract public attention.

"We would therefore also like to make it clear that the statement attributed to Iggy Pop that he believes Justin Bieber is the future of rock and roll does not represent Iggy Pop's personal opinion but was part of the creative process for this campaign and was intended to be ironic."

Although Pop has not commented directly on the issue, he did Tweet a link to Amnesty's apology

Yeah I love Amnesty's "quirky sense of humour" .... they're so witty maybe they should audition to be official joke writers for the North Korean secret police, or the Taliban?

Yep.....reading through that it looks like the only person they're apologising to is Iggy.
